Mixed breeds

I lost one to a coyote. I almost have near total flock disaster leaving mine out to free range unattended. I must stay with them outside with either my dogs(indoor dogs) or a weapon(like a stick or broom) and tear gas pepper spray to keep several different dogs out. It's so frustrating! We have to fence in our property to keep the neighbors dogs out. Until then, my flock stays in the coop/run unless I'm outside. I've been busy handling a new set in the brooder, eggs in the bator and handling a bunny my daughters just got 2 weeks ago. Plus, I must rest in between since I broke my neck a few years ago an am disabled with an ongoing neck injury and severe pain.:/

I already lost a hen to a coyote midday. We have a whole pack living in my backyard. I want those out too.:/.

I'm really frustrated that the neighbors don't keep their chicken killing dogs in their own property. I only get a sorry that they are in my yard and here they are in my yard the very next day. One of the dogs will attack me too. He viciously barks at me.

My barred EE has full cheeks sprouted. I need to update a picture. She's super cute and at 5 months she's sounding like a goose. Last night I put her on the big roost with her flock mates. The only ones having issues with this batch of 3 is my ones I bought in March at the store. I'll be starting the integrating again a new batch in a few weeks and need the floor space.

I am so excited to find this thread. Today I am penning up some girls specificaly for cross breeding. The project will consist of 1 Jersey Giant hen, 1 Buff orpington hen, 2 Easter Egger hens, 4 production Red hens, 3 Welsummer hens and 1 Welsummer x Easter Egger hen. The hens are going to be split into two groups. The Roosters used for the crossings will be a Jersey Giant and a Buff orpington.
The Welsummer x Easter eggers from my last cross breeding experiment lay large green eggs, the eggs average 2 1/2 to 3 inches in length, the cross hens lay about 5 times per week on average.
With these crossing I am hoping to get large sized dual purpose chickes, hens that lay frequently, larger sized eggs and some broodies.
I plan in incubating about 40 eggs, hope that 20 hatch, and only 10 of those end up being roosters. Will be interesting to see how big the cockrels and pullets grow out of the mixes.
Does anyone have any of the above mentioned birds that they have crossed, or pictures ?

A face shot of my barred EE. Her fluffy cheeks just popped out. I wonder if she'll have a beard?

I sold all my mixes from my hatch, except the two Faverolles X Cochins. They are just gorgeous! I have them penned off by themselves with their mother a pure Salmon Faverolles. I am curious how the mother bred back to the son will turn out.

Here is the boy, Zinky, my youngest daughter named him!

Here is the girl, KoKo, my oldest daughter named her

And the three together, you can see how much bigger they are then mom. Mom (Zimby) need to get away from her flock anyways, she was the roosters favorite and lost all her tail and beard feathers.

I have a mixed flock of almost everything. My bigger ones are defentally muts, my polish I can't quite figure it out. They are from ideal hatchery so who knows??????? i also have some ee's/americanas. some have puffy cheecks with a stand up tail others don't............so i am anxiously waiting on eggs from them to see what colors we get?? I'm getting about 5 or so from 13 hens...i'm hoping they hurry up and all lay. I give them extra light, cyanne pepper, and acv in the water everyday. seems to work...and letting them be outside wondering around for about an hour. I have learned to NEVER leave them unattended...had a whole pack of coyotees last night come for a visit, but our dog kept them at bay...i now remember why we got her. good girl
