MJ's little flock

Hi MJ and everyone :frow

It's wonderful to get paid for doing something you love MJ :). Still, I hope you get caught up more quickly than you think so you can enjoy your break :fl

Pepper seems to have broken her broodiness, but she is still sleeping in the nesting box, so I am putting her in the dog crate at night.

Tsuki has been put into solitary confinement today.

The pecked at place on Alice's back was all bleedy this morning and when Tsuki had a go at her I thought it was time for time out :rant

I'm going to have to make a chicken saddle I think. (Which I discovered here on BYC, Thanks @Kris5902 ! :frow)

That's just Tsuki being Tsuki. Poor girl. :lau:gig:lau:lau:gig

Actually she's a bad girl. I hope Alice heals quickly. Best to separate when they are that mean.

I would probably Blu Kote or the local equivalent, mostly just to cover the red spot that might induce further pecking. Though hen saddles do help with covering up bare backs, they also don’t seem to be the chickens favorite adornment. (I hear they prefer hats and such ;)!) it’s not that big a bare patch from what I can see. Either way, Naughty Tsuki! And a time out may be in order. I hope Alice heals up quickly.

I’m seeing quite a bit of pecking order Drama with my housing arrangements here, and some of my smaller girls are in full on hard Molt. The feathers around her bare spot also look like they’ve taken some battle damage, but it’s not the normal time of year for your girls to be molting is it? Is this something Tsuki has done before? Do keep a very close eye out regardless, because in a very short time (like between a noon check and afternoon check around 4pm, RIP Mr Eyebrows) it can turn from nothing into a plucking frenzy drawing blood and ripping out large numbers of feathers.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone and for the advice Kris. I looked up patterns for chicken saddles and my youngest made one up for Alice.

It's not a perfect fit but we can tweek it and it is protecting her for now. She is voluntarily roosting in the "new" coop with Edwina and Pepper tonight :)

I’m really hoping I’ve broken Charlie’s broodiness. She’s sleeping in broody jail tonight but she seemed much less broody today, so I’m hoping tonight will do it (it’s the third night). She really didn’t want to go back in. :(

Apparently Cetrigen “The Purple Stuff” is the Oz stuff to have for red, bleedy spots; antiseptic and insect repellent, not to mention chook repellent as it makes red spots purple!

That is very clever. Nice job putting it together so quickly. I agree with @Kris5902 . I might blue kote it as well.
