MJ's little flock

There is a bookshop in a quiet leafy suburb of Brisbane that is almost like that. A friend, who knows Brisbane really well, took me & it was lovely. They had a little verandah out the back where you could sip coffee while browsing the books you might buy 0verlooking the garden & because it was high out across Brisbane proper. It was small but very popular.
There was such a bookstore in Bethlehem, PA for like 100 years (since sold, sadly). It was several connected row-houses of wall-to-wall books and also unique gift and decorative items, and a quaint and beautiful eating area. They served pastries, various things like English scones, etc., soups, sandwiches, coffees and teas. One could eat in a small dining area, or they also had little bistro tables along the walls and through a glass and stone walkway with green growing foliage and flowers, and browse through your books and whatever.
People loved it. I loved it.
MJ’s little tea shop would be like this. :love

Mary

Mary is a black Australorp. She is the prettiest of my three chickens with iridescent black plumage and big black eyes that go blink-blink in a very charming way.

Favourite hobby: drinking. Mary is a waterholic.

Favourite saying: wohr-wohr

Rank: formerly Lieutenant, now Captain. Captain's rank was obtained by strategically using her weight, agility and determination to obtain the top spot on the roost from the disgraced former Captain, Janet.

Named after: Mary is named after Mary Kopscanyi. Mary Kopscanyi was my Nana's great-niece. Mary showed me kindness and love from the day I was born until the day she died. Her house is across the street from my house (both houses were built at the same time by the same person - my great-great uncle) but it is now owned by a lovely young family of four. Mary's house was built for her grandmother, Sarah, who was my grandmother's oldest sister. Tragically, Mary's mother died young, so Sarah provided Mary with a loving home and family life. Mary passed away quite suddenly in 2016, although she was well into her 80s. Her husband, Frank, died in 2017. They are both survived by their daughter Elizabeth who I don't call often enough. I'll call her today. Mary the chicken helps me keep Mary Kopscanyi's memory alive.

For background, here are the other profiles.
I have 13 of these black australorps they are the Australorp Gang that lives in Chick-Mahal. So far my guess is I have 12 ladies and one boy but at 9 weeks old still not 100%. No visible signs that there is a boy but one used to make strange noises and suddenly no longer does that. Time will tell. Good luck with yours.

I love her. She's a darling. She's going to be four years old next year and she's doing well, although she doesn't lay much any more. Only 19 eggs so far this year.

Are you in the US or Australia? I'm guessing the US. Most Aussies buy pullets at the point of lay, although there are lots of breeders too. The hatcheries mostly service the egg and meat industries. The US Australorps look very different from the Australian! Like a leghorn type but larger and black.

Chickens love when there are new “things” in their yard to explore. We cut a couple trees down and dragged them into the yard (we are going to cut them up) and now our girls like to perch on them.
I plan to reuse the timber to make a jungle gym for the hens :) One of these days ..

Lovely. I like peaceful, public environments where people don't have to rush.

These days folks are stuck to screens (I'm stuck to one right now). I think it's important we look at more faces and hear more voices.
