She's a large hen, which would be a factor, but more importantly she had managed to expel both of the false eggs from the nest. They're wooden and heavier than real eggs, so that task would've been awkward and called for some effort. I assume that's when she put her foot through Ivy's egg.is she very heavy, or is Ivy's eggshell a bit thin, or was it just caught between a rock and a hard place?
that would explain it. I have a hen who routinely expels fake eggs from the nest box; funny how some just don't like to share the space with anyone else's eggs, while most here think the more, the merrier. She's a large hen, which would be a factor, but more importantly she had managed to expel both of the false eggs from the nest. Ivy's shells are not especially weak. I'd say her shells are quite strong. I often take two attempts at cracking them.
It is strange. Edie hadn't expelled Ivy's egg, so I assume it's only the wooden ones she can't tolerate.that would explain it.
