MJ's little flock

The temp got up to 40C today, so everyone had some watermelon. It was the youngsters' first time and they loved it! So glad the little cockerels had an opportunity to enjoy a cold treat on a hot day.
Watermelon is such a special treat for them on hot days. That was very generous of you.

27° outside Fahrenheit. I won't be feeding melon today. My birds love soaked dry dog food so I will feed it warm. I mix the dog food with mash and scratch seed.

Just a pretty for a new day.

A fruit tree blooming at the wrong time of year. The warm weather has mixed thing up. The new freezing weather will kill the blooms now.

That's no good. No fruit from those blossoms. 😥

I don' tknow about generous, it was more a matter of putting two and two together. The watermelon was sitting there in the fridge, and the chickens were hot. I'm glad they enjoyed it!

That's the first time I have ever heard someone say they feed dog food to their chickens! Where I live, that would be a very expensive way to keep a flock. Do you feed it as a treat or as a staple? I have been known to let the chickens clean up the leftover cat food if the cat left most of it untouched, but I was so worried about the chickens filling up on food that's not good for them, I stopped doing it.

BTW, this thread is kept by an Australian (me) for the purpose of logging and discussing the wellbeing of the chickens at my house with other people who are interested. So, it's not a random chat thread. But there are many threads for just chatting. You could try one of the cafe threads or the hatch-along threads. On the other hand, your comments on what's happening with my flock are very welcome.

I’m sorry I forgot he was a boy! He’s beautiful.
Well, he only just started crowing and I was holding a hope he was a tomboy she because I'm in a very long-term house and therefore need to maintain friendly relationships with the neighbours, some of whom work shifts. Less importantly, the neighbours have the option of complaining to the council about excessive noise which would incur a fine as well as the loss of a the rooster. Very soon, the two cockerels will have to visit the vet to be humanely killed.
