Well if we can all understand that it is in a womans psychological makeup to kill via suffocation and similar..poision...
And a man will shoot or cut you to pieces.
Look it up.
I was raised with my dad and three brothers but I still count..

The first time hunting that I shot something, I wanted to cry. Ihad to do this circle of life, I'm going to eat it, thank you dear animal thing in my head. Don't dare kill a frog around me unless your going to eat it.
The reason its so hard to kill a chicken (in our heads) is that they have long stretchy necks and flap around. And you have to typically chop the head. (Or use a .22) but my guns are too high caliber.
So, wood chopping block and ax. Stretch the neck and grab the head and don't hit your hand. Try it you'll so much appreciate life after taking one. Even for good cause.
I've had to hit a raccoon on the head with a shovel too.
What happens when you are in front of a preditor with too high a caliber gun/ rifle and you have to save your flock? You'll grab a shovel. Do you really want a raccoon pouncing on you? No you'll hit it as hard as you can. Maybe more than once. Id like everyone arguing the not to behead method to please answer that question because its a god one.

I don't think anyone is arguing the not to behead method. Other suggestions have been given because some can't swing the axe. At least I'm not arguing it:)

i would think that CO would be a fine way to dispatch a bird. BUT, i don't know if i would eat it after that. I think i read several years ago how CO permanently bonds to muscle in your body. that's how a coroner can tell CO poising in people... red/pink skin. though it might be perfectly fine. not an expert in that area.
ya, probably would. we were talking about deformed chicks. injured, ect.... babies

yeah, i just threw that in there for the person with the unruly rooster. i wouldn't CO or ether a bird if i planned on eating it. but who knows... it might add some serious flavor!

Granny your funny and biga it really does remind me of a nazi thing. Mother is german....
Well, granny id love to have you around to teach me a few things, and the how to with the nails please add a picture, I'm very interested!
Facebook now allows beheadings I'm sure its ok here with chickens:D
Granny a lot of people here don't produce for meat.
As for humane society if they're like PETA they go too far.
Maybe we love our egg laying chickens but as a friend said many people quite after an animal attacks their herd or they realize with milk goats anyways, and farming in general, you never get a day off.
If your going to farm, truly learn to slaughter. Buy a BB gun they're cheap. You can even shoot yourself in the foot and live.
I know we are making jokes but killing should be sacred and held as that at all times.
Learn from native americans and we may have a world left fr our grandkids.

i am computer illiterate. i can barely find my way here. no pics. just show the peace sign with your fingers. thats how the nails go in the wood.

With all due respect, I'll choose to stay far away from anyone who puts an animal in a bag, ties it to a cars exhaust pipe and starts the car.

If you wish to misquote me that is fine, I guess the part where I say "if you cannot put an animal down humanely" was intentionally left out, just so the quote would sound condescending?

Everyone does what they are comfortable with and with the intention to end the animals suffering as quickly and painless ad possible, obviously everyone here is passionate about this or we wouldn't be discussing it so don't judge anyone.

I've been following this thread and Granny has me cracking up.

In all seriousness though, I think I would just take the bird (chick or mean rooster) to the vet. I'm too far gone from my roots and can't eat something that I've kept as a pet, which is what my chickens will be. BUT that's just me.

Although I will say that if a rooster/anything else will get a swift crack with a heavy shovel if it comes after one of my kids.

Mis quote? Your whole post was there in mine. What you think is humane may or may not be to another and vice versa. The exhaust method was from a bird conservation association. Humane Societies use gas because it is one of many humane ways to end the suffering.
Edit is your friend. I personally would never bag any animal, attach it to my cars exhaust and start the vehicle. Not only is is immoral and dangerous as all get up, it is a good way to get cited for animal cruelty. I'd like to see the sources you quote as that being "acceptable".

I took a keen interest in this thread. Putting a bird down is what has held me back the last two years of starting my flock. I have thought deeply about it for awhile and finally feel its a way of life when you keep chickens. I am ok with it now and very excited to FINALLY start this spring, I will have them in about two weeks. I have to agree with most of what Turkinitup209 has said. My husband bought me a hatchet and said its all on me if it ever has to happen, I hope not, but I am sure it eventually will....I am sorry about the chick.
