I concur with the one post that said its more the personality of the chicken than the chicken breed. I've had buff orpingtons and also bard rocks that were so noisy I had to find them new homes before the blew the deal for the entire flock. I also had a silver laced wyandott and she had a big voice and liked to use it. My Americana's which are now about 13 years old have always been very quiet. I have a speckled sussex and she is pretty quiet too. My mom has a barred rock in another flock and she never makes a peep except after laying an egg. Luck of the draw a bit.
