Hey! I have a broody Blue Cochin hen (Lily) who hatched out a chick this morning.
She is staying with it, and for the most part does good, but to get it back under her she continuously pecks on its head. I don't think it is too hard, but it certainly looks like it would hurt. Also, she doesn't raise her breast up to let it get back under her like our Buff Orpington does with her chicks.
Is this normal? Thanks in advance!

Just one chick?
My broodys never really pecked the chicks. When they got nervous they would scratch at the dirt and sometimes kick them, but they wouldn't peck them.
I'm trying to decide if it would be better if you raised it yourself, or let it try to be a chicken...

Yes, so far she has one chick, there are still about five eggs. Thanks!
My mama hen did this with her chicks also, but not until they were old enough to start wandering. She didn't like that. No permanent harm done, but I didn't know if it was normal either.
Okay, thank you!
She's just telling the chick not to wander yet.. My broodies normally do that to chicks when they're still sitting on eggs that haven't hatched yet. She might just be confused since she only has 1 chick and thinks she still has more hatching?
Thank you! My mom kinda thought that too, but we weren't sure.
