My chicks are jerks - help with PVC feeders

I just feed my chickens on the ground because that’s where the food is going to end up anyways. That’s where they want it and they get what they want.

Last week, my husband built a couple of 4 inch PVC pipe feeders and installed them in our coop. Our chicks are 4 weeks old, so I'm not sure if this will still be an issue as they get bigger, but within a few hours of installation, our 7 chicks managed to kick out ALL of the food that was in the feeders. Maybe it tastes better after they poop on it? Maybe they were searching for a free prize like in the cereal boxes? I have no idea, but like I said, they're jerks. :lau

I've seen other PVC feeders with some kind of half moon shaped piece to keep the feed from being kicked out, but I'm not sure what piece is. Any ideas to keep the feed IN the PVC feeders instead of on the floor??

My suggestion is get the black end cap cover. Drill 2-3 holes about 1" above lowest point that large enough for the adult chicken head.

With that design it's gonna happen.
If you change the bottom pieces to just a Y piece,(straight piece and Y) it should help greatly, with your problem. You may also have to extend where they stick their head in a couple inches, with another straight piece.
I use a DIY no waste feeder.

That's what I did. I started out with the wrong pieces, and they made a mess. Then I discovered the Y shape. I also added a one-third moon shape cut out of a cottage cheese/sour cream lid with duct tape, and I no longer have them hunting for the best pieces.

I might also add that the pipe doesn't need to be nearly as long as it is. I only fill it about 1/4 full - it still takes them a while to get through that because they get to free range all day.
