My chicks are jerks - help with PVC feeders

With that design it's gonna happen.
If you change the bottom pieces to just a Y piece,(straight piece and Y) it should help greatly, with your problem. You may also have to extend where they stick their head in a couple inches, with another straight piece.
I use a DIY no waste feeder.

I made these as well, but with the Y piece on the end. My chickens (who were around 12 weeks at the time) did the exact same thing. I watched one of them sweep out the feed with her beak. The worst part was that it was raining nonstop that whole week, so everytime they emptied it, the food would get soaked on the ground. I gave up and went back to the other feeder because it rained for about three weeks straight. I am planning on getting the end caps and cutting them in half.

I just put my feed in a feeder from tsc. All my chickens climb and scratch and it spills everywhere then they scratch and peck on the ground. It is what they do.
Mine is in a plastic pan that held Costco baklava (which was delicious). They jump in it, and tip it over, and it's all over the ground. Covered in poop. Then the rabbits come over and eat some. Shampoo rinse repeat.

Someday I'll have a nice feeder built for me, that my chickens will find a way to dump on the ground.

One of my chicks, and only one, pulled all the feed out of any feeder like it was her job till about 6 weeks old. Guess it was in her DNA

I made mine like this with the bottom part covered. A lot less mess this way.
