Methadone (not crystal meth!) is an opiate, closely related to heroin (as are many opiates, i.e. narcotic painkillers). It's not terribly addictive, unless taken recreationally. It is commonly used to help heroin addicts get clean--they come into a controlled environment and get a monitored dose of methadone (you've heard of "methadone clinics") to help control the withdrawal symptoms they'd suffer if they went cold-turkey off the heroin.

For people with actual pain, it can be a Godsend, and I can attest personally that if you have pain, you do NOT get a "high" from it. Not at all. It's probably just a tiny step above Oxycontin on the pain relief scale. I took it all day, every day, for months on end, but had no problem stopping cold turkey after my surgery, because my chronic pain was gone. Simple as that.

I just couldnt think what it was and was trying to figure out why i had heard of it. I was so worried for my mom when she was on oxy, but it didnt help her pain and it didnt make her addicted either so that was all that counted to me.

Try something much more liberal than Atkins, like Protein Power LifePlan . It is really not hard. I've been doing it for a little while, and I've not felt deprived or hungry one single time, and my mom told me today that my (fat) midsection is "melting."

I mean, whaddaya got to lose (except a bunch of fat), right?

Generally speaking, if you have actual pain, you don't have much to fear from narcotics as far as addiction goes. If you are hurting, then the drug goes to the "pain centers" in your brain, and deals with that. IF, however, you feel fine, and take these hardcore narcotic opiates, well, then they go straight to your brain's "pleasure centers," and before you know it, you're gonna have a problem.
