My first ROO

Love this!! Keep the stories coming. But don't let my horses know yours have cable tv, or mine'll tear the barn down. They already like to escape and rearrange, and I'm pretty sure I piss them off when I fix their redecoration (which usually consists of the half full manure bucket dumped and rolled around the floor).

Thanks for asking!

Wow, what a day. My job drains my brain. So if my writing trails off, I've fallen asleep...
...
......
..

Today, I brought my brooder chicks to school. My grade 4s and 5s are studying responsible farming, coup design, habitat, .... and also they just like staring at cute baby chickens.

...and so do I ....

The chicks are two weeks right now. I thought is was a good idea to bring them outside the other day because it was sunny and the grass is showing, so, kinda fun to walk around, scratch and peep sorta thing.

But, apparently Roopenn is not ready for fatherhood. He gave up his singing career and found his inner 'ninja-sniper-attack-hate-screaming-anti-children' assassin calling.

Luckily, I'm taller than he is.

Anyways, the girl's were just guffuffled over the whole 'children thing', trying to figure out whose egg had hatched.

"It's yyoueeeeers?"
"Noitss ....noooooooooOOT"
"Itsnotmawwwwyyyne. Shewalwaystakes...mmMMaaauuuyyyinne"
"...Tsnotmaauuuuyyinne.."
......
"I useprooooooooootectiooooOOOOON!"
"?????"

So I figured out that Lindsay really Loves peanuts, and will come running for them. Rue eats them as well, just so not to be left out, and Roopenn participates in so far as to be a polite dinner guest and conform to social pressure. I think it's kinda like having spaghetti on the first date. He's not quite sure how to eat peanuts, so he carries the peanut around in his beak. Luckily, the girls are too busy eating to notice.

On a good note they have finally figured out that we only answer the back door, and so all three are presently training my husband to open the door on command.

Bye for now :)

Yay for chicks! I need a video of Roopen and the peanut sometime... I've never seen a chicken eat a peanut. Hopefully he picks up singing again soon. Are the chicks crested? Goodnight QH, see you in the morning.

I have to say, if you ever want to be rooless , just get Roopen across the line. I don't live that far from it and work 12 blocks from it! I'll take him! Purse was stolen and b/c I was born in the states but to Canadian parents, I need to get a passport so they'll reissue my special drivers license to cross the border! Stupid red tape!!!

Course we'd still have to figure out how to get him from the East coast to the West coat.... How far can he fly? Lol

Considering he's still trying to figure out how to eat a peanut, let's not hold our breath on waiting for him to learn flight.

Good thing he's pretty!

Silly Roopenn, those chicks are not a threat, and I don't think he will impress the girls by going all ninja on a creature a fraction of his size.

I wonder if he is carrying those peanuts around trying to get the hens' attention. "Hey girls, look what I have, a peanut ... check it out." A truly confident head rooster of the flock will engage in a behavior called tidbitting - carry the treat and pick it up and drop it and point with his beak and make a high pitched cluck and pick it up... and look to see if the hens are watching.. and point and waggle his wattles at the treat... until the hens accept the treat in gratitude.

Love the pic. Chickens are quite good at training humans.

Hmmmmm ... Ok that is what he's doing. The girls are just too busy pecking to notice.

He is a *tad bit* over responsible about his new position here as solo Rooster. Mind you I think everything else on the farm is bigger than him ... so maybe he saw the chick thing it as a chance to show his might off.

Orrrrrr who knows maybe he was running to save them, cuz they were peeping? Although I wasn't ready to wait and find out!
