my goose incubation UPDATE all are hatched... pics of all 3 on pg13

Geese are the hardest I have ever hatched.

The eggs are usually nastyand need tending before setting for incubating.

The last set I put in this week I sanded the mud off them. I did not wash them.

Before I have had really bad eggs and did wash them with a bleach solution as recommended in an old brochure about hatching waterfowl.

I put my eggs in and don't touch a thing until day 5. This is the first day for misting and cooling the eggs. I never take mine out of the trays. I never touch them to candle. I use a surefire flashlight and on day 5 you should be able to see the first veins of the embryos. When I take the tray out for cooling and misting daily again I don't touch them but I do shine the light through them.

I find it is more important that you not handle them with your bare hands. So many types of bacteria transfer from your hands to the eggs and seep into the membranes through the pours. I had someone send me a nasty batch of eggs once and nothing helped them. Black and green bacteria was growing between the shell and membrane by day 6.

Good luck with your hatch.

I have 12 sebbies in my bator now.

I had forgotten about waiting until day 4 or 5 and started cooling them and wetting them on the 3rd day. Is this a problem? I hope not. I need to buy a spray bottle 'cause I just put them in the same water that I am adding to the bator for a split second ... or I just squeeze some the water from teh sponges that I am re-moisting.

How do you candle without taking them out? I have a huge like million candle watt spot light that I was candling them with...but I can't even imagine holding that thing over the eggs....so how else can I do it....I just picture worst case scenario...the darn thing falling onto them....what I had been doing was setting a box over the lamp, with a hole in it and candling that way. I have only really candled all before putting htem into the bator and once yesterday...the day before I only candled one but put it back.

any suggestions?

its going good its hard to see clearly becuase my light isnt bright enough, but thet are getting darker by the day. i was never able to get good pics of candling.... i think im going to get a new flashlight this weekend, but today when i checked on my geese the female was on the nest all day and hissing at me and so was the male and i saw her get up on her nest and turn the eggs, (she has 5) and then sit down, so im thinking she might have gone broody!

ya i didnt see anything until day 5-6 so be patient, they have thick shells so without the proper light and dark room, you wont see much, i am probably going to buy a good light this weekend... and no my seb's didnt die..? im not sure what you mean by that

oh, I asked because I didn't know if when you stated you set 6 seb x seb x embden if you meant some were sebs and some were embden...so when you said only 3 were viable...I thought you meant that only 3 of the embden's lived and teh 3 sebs died....

Now I think i understand better...its a seb/embden cross right?

I heard that crosses are easier to hatch than purebreds...not sure though, never tried it. Shoot so far, I haven't hatched one pure seb egg
