My peach pied is sick

Bought a trio of peach pied two weeks ago. Was down in the pens yesterday and my wife pointed out on of the hens face looked red and swollen. So a trip to the vet today was in order. He said she has a sinus infection and some mites. Gave me baytril pills to give twice a day for five days. He Said use sevin dust for the mites. Grand total for trip was $10 for the medicine. He aslo cut her cheek to help with drainage and sucked out her nostrils. Hopefully she will make a full recovery!!

I hope so too, you were very diligent in taking her to the vet and caught it early, so congrats for being so diligent and I wish her the best of health. Is that an anti-biotic that they put her on?

Great Vet !
Baytril is some great stuff, so it should clear up the sinus infection. I usually use it as a last resort, because if Baytril doesn't work you're in trouble and it can get $$$. Tylan 50 works with sinus infections also - but be careful, often sinus infections can be caused by respiratory infections that can spread to others. Keep a close eye on your others and don't walk in another pen after walking in hers..

I now have her quarantined in the barn by herself. First day of medicine went good. She is still swollen around the eyes but she is eating and drinking. Hope she starts improving soon.

Well the swelling seems to be going down some today. One side is definately doing better than the other but there is a definate improvement. She is still eating fine and I added some safeguard to her water to help with worms in case.

That's awesome! I'm glad she's getting better - if you're like me, your peafowl are like kids almost - so I wish her the best of health.

Well she healed all fine, however today when I went out to the pen I found my purple white eye with a swollen face and crusted over eye. We rushed her to the vet and he is keeping her to dose her with antibiotics and keep a closer eye on her. However he said it may be too late for her eye. My poor girl!!!! I hope not. He says it should not be contagious to each other but more than likely from pecking. I did go buy some duramycin for poultry and added to the birds water to help with any other birds. He said it could help stave off any more infections.

Durymician really won't do much for that. Tylan or Baytril is best. If their is no rank smell about the face, then you can get a product called Denegard for swine. It is a little pricy, but a little goes a long way. It is for treating MG infections, which many respiratory illnesses start from and spread. I would treat all flock near your problem area. They have a web site with a lot of info and dosing. Like Tylan it is sold for livestock and those selling it do not know how to use on birds, so don't ask. You will want to add it to some water and mix with some feed, as it has a bitter taste. Do for 14 days, typically in 5 days they look fine. I treat all my birds every few months since people come and go here.
