Update: He's quite the leader of the flock. All eggs have been fertilized! The hens aren't afraid of him, and even peck at him to gain his attentions. He's a protector, faithfully pacing the coop door after dark until I come out to shut the door. If I shine the flashlight on the threshold and talk him into it: "C'mon Cochin... good boy... c'mon cochin... night night time...", he'll retire voluntarily and without incident. He warns them, he watches out for them. He crows darned loud, but none of the neighbors have complained (yet). I leave a note on the door with my number in the event.
