Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Love the coloring on those two but especially the white.
Me too. I can't wait to see what he's going to look like fully grown. I wasn't planning on keeping another roo as we have two planned for the flock, but I just love his coloring so much I decided to have a seperate coop and run for him and 2 or 3 hens so I can keep him and not worry about the hens being over used by the roos. (Of course, I could always get more hens than I planned....

) At some point I really want to get some good show girl eggs (10th or 11th gen) and incubate them. I would love some showgirls too. Especially the white with black skin.

DH had to take care of the chickens today since I was gone until late evening. When I got home he was throwing "scratch" to them which was actually flock raiser. Now we have wet mushy pellets all over the yard and driveway. His first comment was "Turkster is a really nice looking bird. He's a keeper." Apparently DH thinks NN chicks are ugly. I've always thought ours was cute. Now he has the green light from everyone to be our new flock rooster. So happy!

For those of you who sell chicks, is there really a market out there for Turkens? In my area everyone wants orpingtons and black silkies. I've never seen anyone asking around for NNs. If I hatch out a bunch of babies will I be able to sell them?

I think it depends on the part of the country you are in. Here, people won't even touch a NN that didn't get the NN gene, if they know about it.

From ad responses it's mixed here. Sometimes no interest, then wow, they fly off the perches...

More often, they have no interest until they see them in person. Fairly often when they came for something else(I used to breed and sell peafowl), they end up taking a few NN also. Many became interested when I showed eggs, they were surprised at the size. These persons would never have responded to an ad for NN.....

Other times they became interested only after learning they need no special care. So many assumed they needed special shelter, sunblock applications etc.

Yeah I've also heard " they're so ugly I've got to have one of them." The baby ones if course is what they're talking about.

Kev, I have a question for you if you don't mind! You really seem to know what you're doing genetics-wise. What exactly should I be selecting for while trying to achieve exchequer? For now I'm selecting for more white, because as you saw, the parents have a lot of black. After that, however, where should I go? Is there anything in particular I should select for?
