Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I was noticing that hatcheries only sell mixed colored NNs...

Thinking this might be easier/faster if I get some black or blue NNs that have already been selected that I've seen in this thread. But then, never know what black is hiding.

Basically anything silver based(birchen, mottled, colombian, wheaten) would be easier than red.

*edit- I'm one of those research addict people. Looks like I'll be obsessed with chicken genetics for a while.

write to @NAVA her NN are the best. She ships live chicks because the survival rate is better than hatching eggs. Last I heard she was working on perfecting white NN but I did order some of her black/blue/splash a few years so she may have continued that line ?

Thanks for the info Flower.

And all the others who have provided info and tips on breeding and genetics!

I'm still researching breeds to start this little project whim of mine... and mat have decided to come at the crest issue from two directions. SLP x SLW/SLC on one side for crested SL, and Creve x LB/NN on the other giving me crestedNN blacks on the other. That way all breeding will get a double dose of Cr and smaller combs to promote better cresting on both sides as well... I was reading some cresting genetics on another site and it was being discussed that the reason why most mixes don't have good cresting is because of large comb growth taking up room on the skull that would otherwise be feathered.

Anyway. None of that plan is set in stone yet because I'm still doing more research/reading.
This breeding/genetics stuff is really interesting. I kept chickens the first, approx, 25 years of my life on the family farm and such... but never anything other than hatchery stuff, and I certainly never thought about the genetics of it all.

I believe I can honestly say, most of us don't really care what or why you want to do something. We all have our own little 'projects'.

Agreed! But we'll all cheer you on in your endeavors...especially when you post pictures. We love pictures.

Umm... should I PM you. It was a very short thread, but I don't think I'm supposed to link/promote other sites on BYC.
I googled 'crest genetics chickens'.

Anyway, the point was made that all fully crested breeds all have reduced combs; combs that grow primarily nearer the beak and are smaller in length along the head. One breed that has a taller/larger comb, the Old Polish Crested, has a tall sometimes floppy comb, but the length along the head is greatly reduced so that it looks more like a quarter circle(curved along the front, straight down the back to the head).

the coop, first google hit?

If that's the one.. imo the discussion is not much more than speculation.. Okay fine, but is it true..? Note one person found a study that seemed to show some kind of association between crest size and Db in at least one line.

As I said.. tried to create colors in polish- original plans were for red duckwing(e+), crele and wheaten and some others. What I didn't mention towards the later generations I got desperate and reduced the goal to 'any non standardized color'.. in other words selection became concentrated on only two things- larger crest and 'oh please, please just give me ANY other color...'

All of that while also breeding to keep with the polish type and occasional backcrosses to pure polish.

The issue was crest size .. getting full feathering in the crests was not overly difficult.. the problem was, the crest feathers were 'short'. Similar to the old Polish actually. This happened irregardless of comb size, the smallest combed birds still had "short feathers".

So I'm skeptical of the basic idea of comb size=crest size... because I've been there, hands on.

Ok... gotcha. I see what you are saying, and respect your experience.

I'm honestly not striving for a really full sized polish crest though. Not big enough to impede eyesight so much, but hopefully bigger than just an awkward sprig. Something similar to the old polish crested would be good IMO.
Still, I think it will be a fun project with lots of hatching and culling of tasty birds, even if I don't get to where I want with the crest. And even if some are only suitable for the stockpot and soup due to smaller frame/build. Plenty of extra, heavy-mix breed, cockerels from the hatches to capon will only make me that much happier.

Note: I grew up on a working farm, everything was eventually food. I totally respect those that only keep chickens as pets. It's just not my approach.
