Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I had the same concern, as my interest in NNs is primarily for meat, but was reassured over on the Breeding for Production thread that I would not offend anyone here, so I came on over. My project will be to cross NNs and New Hampshire Reds as meat birds, and possibly also NNs and Black Copper Marans for the same reason. I'll also probably keep some "pure" NNs for meat as well. Yummiest bird I've ever eaten!

I pick up all the babies on September 9 - I can't wait!

Although I have to admit, those showgirls and frizzle crosses have me seriously wanting to try that - which totally wouldn't fit into my plans. But whatever - plans can always change...

FYI: I have some business to take care of so I might be 'off the air' for a couple of days.

Most of the regulars know that I'm focusing my efforts toward establishing good birds for the purpose of caponization but I also wanted to point out that another plan, likely a more important and something that will provide lasting effects on my flock is crossing NNs over White Chanteclers to produce a larger fowl, for whatever purpose I may have for them.

At this point in time, color will be of no consequence but that may change in time. The main thing is, I want to keep the good size I already have and even take the average a bit higher...both in weight and stature.

Talt to you all in a few days

I'm thinking that Frizzles might be easier to pluck. At least...that's my justification to crossing my NNs and my Frizzle Easter Eggers.

I see that many people want to cross NN to get bigger birds. my NN is 4 months old and she has already been my biggest bird. the other 3 are about 2 mo and already bigger than my 4 mo araucana.I wander if NN in US are smaller than european.

It is my understanding that the size of someone's NNs depends on where you get them, even just within the US (e.g., big meaty strain vs strain where they've selected for egg production instead, leading to smaller chickens). Perhaps you are correct that European NNs are bigger - that would be interesting to know. And some of the crosses people are planning are also to (hopefully) get faster growth as well (not just bigger, but bigger by an earlier age). That's my goal with trying the NNxNew Hampshire Red cross. I don't know that it will be any better than the straight NNs - we'll see.

I am learning about NN. my babies are still young and I don't know if they will lay many eggs. I even don't know if they are pure, I have just noticed that they are bigger then a few hybrids which I bought for meat. I have just remembered that many years ago my grandparents had much smaller NNs, and if I remember well they had less feathers. as it was in another country I guess they are no european NNs. that's why the information about the breeds I found in internet don't mach my chickens.
