See... now I feel like there are folks here that really get me.

I have a two month old granddaughter... I'm already committed to getting her a fluffy, puffy, showgirl as a pet.
My son thinks they are awful. I keep telling him my grand and the chicky can wear matching bows in their hair.

Ok... gotcha. I see what you are saying, and respect your experience.

I'm honestly not striving for a really full sized polish crest though. Not big enough to impede eyesight so much, but hopefully bigger than just an awkward sprig. Something similar to the old polish crested would be good IMO.
Still, I think it will be a fun project with lots of hatching and culling of tasty birds, even if I don't get to where I want with the crest. And even if some are only suitable for the stockpot and soup due to smaller frame/build. Plenty of extra, heavy-mix breed, cockerels from the hatches to capon will only make me that much happier.

Note: I grew up on a working farm, everything was eventually food. I totally respect those that only keep chickens as pets. It's just not my approach.

'cross with polish' is usually an indicator the person wants large crests in their project. That is the only reason I even attempted to give a heads up as to spare possible frustration. I would have never mentioned that had I known old polish sizes were a happy one for you.

was also trying to spare possible frustration in kind of suggesting not to go with polish for dual purpose cross purposes(they really are bad for that)... not discouragement.

I don't know where the last sentence came from though. I'm one of the very last people to direct that at..... when I had peafowl, I ate them just like everything else that was a cull for whatever reason lol.

Today I had to go out to someone's place to assist with their alpacas. I noticed they had chickens and the woman got excited and had to show me her new, strange chicken crosses. In her barn she had a stall with "chirkeys" in it - her words, not mine. She said she bought them from someone as a cross between chickens and turkeys, I didn't have the heart to tell her she was ripped off and they are Naked Neck Chickens without a drop of turkey dna running in their veins.

That last sentence wasn't really directed to you, as I saw that you were definitely in favor of culling.
I just see a lot of posts on the forum from people who keep pets and don't cull/eat their birds at all. It was more a note for those folks. Didn't want to ruffle any feathers, so to speak.

Maybe I should have left it off... I just didn't want to come across badly to the pet keepers. I have a trio of african/chinese goslings growing and treat them like my babies, but the next generation from them won't be quite so lucky.

I'd like to put in Cr on both sides of my starter breeding groups, making one side all SL and the other side black using the Crevecoeur to hopefully simplify the final breeding stage a bit.

the coop, first google hit?

If that's the one.. imo the discussion is not much more than speculation.. Okay fine, but is it true..? Note one person found a study that seemed to show some kind of association between crest size and Db in at least one line.

As I said.. tried to create colors in polish- original plans were for red duckwing(e+), crele and wheaten and some others. What I didn't mention towards the later generations I got desperate and reduced the goal to 'any non standardized color'.. in other words selection became concentrated on only two things- larger crest and 'oh please, please just give me ANY other color...'

All of that while also breeding to keep with the polish type and occasional backcrosses to pure polish.

The issue was crest size .. getting full feathering in the crests was not overly difficult.. the problem was, the crest feathers were 'short'. Similar to the old Polish actually. This happened irregardless of comb size, the smallest combed birds still had "short feathers".

So I'm skeptical of the basic idea of comb size=crest size... because I've been there, hands on.

I can see that you know about the colours. I posted a thread asking about breeding for the colours but nobody answered, here is the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1014240/colour-experts-i-have-a-few-questions

I have 2 white and 2 red NN. if I cross them with red-brown ameraucana roo will all the chicks be red? what colour can I cross with red-brown roo so that I don't get all red? I would like some other colours as well.

I bought white NN so I don't know their background. they might be a NN cross, no guarantee they are pure.

I had the same concern, as my interest in NNs is primarily for meat, but was reassured over on the Breeding for Production thread that I would not offend anyone here, so I came on over. My project will be to cross NNs and New Hampshire Reds as meat birds, and possibly also NNs and Black Copper Marans for the same reason. I'll also probably keep some "pure" NNs for meat as well. Yummiest bird I've ever eaten!

I pick up all the babies on September 9 - I can't wait!

Although I have to admit, those showgirls and frizzle crosses have me seriously wanting to try that - which totally wouldn't fit into my plans. But whatever - plans can always change...
