btw I think two birds from you are mottled just a few feathers here n there.. a bit surprised. I know some had houdan cross mothers, but that would mean Jaxom carries mottle gene... did you get any mottles?

No mottles, I get chicks that have that black/white chick color that can become mottled, but no mottles for me yet. It would suprise me that Jaxom has mottled for sure, but genetics dont' lie you need two to be mottled

I really love the color of that girl of mine that shelbydog has, Nana is what she calls her, but I am determined to keep true to my course and breed only the most naked necked of my NN, I was tickled pink when she wanted to give her a home since if she stayed w/ me it was going to be freezer camp.

if an NN has legs that have a greenish greyish color will they lay an egg that is brown or will it lay a different color?

The color of legs on a chicken has nothing to do with the color of eggs a chicken will lay. Leg color is related to skin color. Usually the bottom of the feet are proof of the skin color. Nor does the color of the earlobes have anything to do with the egg color. These are fallacies that are not infrequently posted.

Think about the chickens with black legs, have you ever seen a Silkie lay black eggs. And the only reason that a Siklie would lay a blue egg would be if that bird was crossed with a bird that had the blue egg gene. Silkies in general have blue ear lobes and that even may be one of the Standards for Silkies but I am not sure of that.

The picture where you have the chicken eating out of your hand, I have a couple of NN's with that color pattern. To me it is just so strikingly beautiful. 5 years ago I was an inner city cop, working a beat in the ghetto...an on the job injury put me out to pasture as they say and I pulled up stakes and just moved out to the country in Arkansas. Bought a farm, have chickens, a pig, a rabbit and some rescued horses. The dogs and cats are another matter. But, I always felt out of place in the city...nothing makes me happier than being out here in the middle of nowhere with my critters. No TV, NO cell phone and NO WORRIES...Lots of chickens, turkeys and Guinea hens...trust me...life is GOOD!!

Yep. Chickens have a gene for color in a specific layer of skin on legs. This combined with yellow body skin gives green legs as you said. Also, this combined with white body skin gives blue/slate legs.

Kass, it is wonderful when nice or pretty birds get lucky to find new homes instead of hopping on the bus to freezer camp. Glad Nana(love that name, tickles the geneticist in me) found a wonderful home!

re: mottles. The boy had a penguin pattern typical of some mottle lines... still has it even almost an adult plus some solid white tail feathers. He is not really showing any mottled feathers yet though.. but a girl surprised me- she didn't have the penguin pattern but lately she's been growing a bunch of solid white feathers in her cap and just now grew some feathers with tiny mottle tips on her back. She looks 'cool' with mostly black body with a wild chess board cap.

Just got home about an hour ago and my chickens have been decimated!!

It was my dog Sasha. We left them at the house for 24 hours Gary was camping and I was working. She breeched the fence somehow, I walked the whole thing and can't see where or how she did it. She had never shown any interest at all in either the chickens or breeching the fence before now. I took Tucker to my FIL so I know he had nothing to do w/ it. She even brought the dead ones in the house, (we have a dog door) walked in the house to dead chickens everywhere! The only survivors were Jackie O, and the 3 broody moms w/ their 8 chicks. (mostly boys) and to make it worse, Gary took all the eggs to the camping trip!!!!!! I have a handful mostly of pullet eggs I am going to put in the bator today to see if I can salvage some of the genetics I was working towards. Just very sad.
