Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Lol to hellbender,

Yeah, I know, and it can be frustrating, because it all depends on which breeds the judges know and what they
'think" they know. My husband got the kids involved in poultry for the competition, I was so not on board for all of the work just to win trophies and ribbons. But our kids belong to the Wisconsin Junior Poultry Association, they do all kinds of learning activities, there are very smart people working with these kids, and the kids are so smart. And the people are so nice. So, I gave in, I can now appreciate the purpose that brings everyone together. And so, you try to stick to the standard way that they run things, I would also like to breed the naked necks, because the handful of kids that would like some, can't find them anywhere either. So, I would like to try and stick to the most pure birds that I can.

HI Kev,

Thanks for your response, Les Farms actually told me you would be the one to talk to. I will check into your suggestions.

Thanks again,
Cheryl

No problem and yeah she asked me.. did not remember to include bayshorek9 in that response.

I'd like to say again- purity is overrated for the most part in the poultry hobby. Very few breeds are pure... and actually some recognized color variants of a single breed even are created without including any of the main breed in the make up. For example, it is entirely possible(and examples actually exist) for a winning or show quality let's say, a White Rock line to have been created and bred without any 'blood' from barred rocks.

It's all about the type not purity for winning shows. Go for the best type NN for the kids. and purity does not=type at all.

Okay, thanks again. I appreciate your help very much.

They are very cute. But the judges are very picky and will disqualify anything that is not fully pure bred.

Thank you very much,
Cheryl

Thank you very much. I'm working on making the NN's pure for the NaNa gene. It just takes time. I haven't been able to find any to my liking either do I'm slowly working on my own line. I do not show and have no desire to show.

I also have another project that I'm working on using the NN.

Glad to help. :) Hope I don't seem to be coming down too hard... I myself went through that a long time ago and eventually learned what was up with the showing business.

Pure stock is just impossible to find nowadays.. even stock bred to the standard is hard to find.

I had some show bred stock for a while but got too distracted by having fun with genetics(my true interest), had intended to get some again but it just never happened... still having crazy genetics fun.

I think it sounds cool what you are doing. I'm sure it does take time. I think it's worth it. I think the Naked Neck chickens are fascinating, their looks, their history and the fact that they are rare. And the way some people are just like ewww! what is that?

My son has gotten more excited talking about breeding NN than entering in the shows. Not a lot of the people like the NN. My husband doesn't like them because they are not a very good breed for competing with, they never win the best of the whole show, but we have fun with them.

Good luck with your project draye!

Take Care, Cher

Thanks.

No, you are not coming down too hard. I just lol, all of you chicken people that have so much knowledge. I go to these chicken shows and am surrounded by smart people, and their children are so knowledgeable, you guys just keep explaining it all to me, eventually some of it sinks in.

My son has also showed interest in the genetic part. We got out of showing for awhile, we just have been going to the shows to help out, he always likes the rare breeds, he won't even bother to show if it's not a breed that he really wants. He is also interested in bantam blue americaunas, but I'm just working on the NN right now.

Thanks again Kev!

Cher
