Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I know you guys are jonesing for some toddler pics, right? lol Sorry about the poopy backgrounds in some of the pics.

Beautimous and her buddy (she is the darker headed one)

Both these guys are barred

Me Too and Blondie, this is her first day in clothes she is acting all dramatic! lol Me Too is the one w/ grey colored down at hatch.

The two Fm guys, the one w/ the white goatee also has white butt fuzz and a couple of white wing feathers, you can see a little hint in the pics.

The two redheads

These two had the most contrast in the chipmunk striping at hatch.

This is the first day out of the brooder (they haven't had heat in the day for most of this week) I would have let them out last week but they are delayed b/c of blondie.

That feed could well have been stale, they were eating it though.

I'm getting a feed now though a 22% layer crumble mix. It really works good, but I'm not a big fan of crumbles, too much waste. I just every couple if days make then clean the ground. Believe me they do too.

I put some water in crumbles and there is no waste at all.

Although I am not fan of barred at all with regular chickens like barred rocks I must say I kind of like it with that different greenish skin tone. The big non naked neck one seems to have mottled with barred, at least she looks like that to me. She must be R-tip's and big barred and mottled rooster's daughter. Is that possible? I mean, is she laying?

Yes she is laying so it is possible.

What protein percentage are you all feeding your chicks? I used to feed the high percentage to the Cornish X but I don't know if that is necessary for the NN dual purpose types.

And are pellets less wasteful? I had a guy tell me one time that the manure stunk worse with pellet feed but from what I see the crumble is just smashed up pellets because sometimes you will find pellets in the bag that are only partially crushed.

My chicks all get 18% protein or higher, especially in the first 4 weeks. And for me it really doesn't matter if I use pellets or mash because I only feed wet/fermented feed. The mash is easier to ferment though, and the company I buy my feed from sells mash so I only use crumbles if I run out of feed before placing my next order. Because the feed is wet, I have minimal waste.

18% for the first 2 months. that is what I find here. I add boiled eggs from time to time. I also ferment or wet their feed.

I tried fermented feed back in the winter and they liked it a lot and as you say the waste was minimal. Trouble I had was it was too cold in my shop to keep the feed warm enough to ferment. Are you all using some type of heated vessel or are you fermenting the feed in your house? I read that egg production is better with less waste and consumption and the benefits go on and on. If I can figure out where to set up my ferment I will go that route.

Do you back fill the ferment to keep it continuous or are you doing separate containers throughout the week? And do you use the pellets or crumble? Reason I ask is I fermented some pellets and they did good but I thought maybe the crumbles may be better for some reason but can't think why except maybe for stiring in the existing if back filling daily.

I went to one of the local TSCs today and all they had of Dumor Starter grower was the smaller bags. They had the 22% but these aren't Cornish x and I don't think they need that much protein. Everything else they had was medicated and I ain't buying that because meds are why I grow my own.

I agree 22% is for cornish x, not NN. I have been told even to feed them 16% but I prefer 18%. a brahma pullet was raised on 16 % and she is my healthiest bird. I have to go to the mainland to buy 18 % protein feed so when it is finished I buy 16 %.
