Hi Everybody! We haven't checked in for a bit, so I figure it's time for an update ... maybe? How are everybody's babies doing?

My youngsters are now almost the same size as their parents. We haven't gotten any eggs, yet, but Nannies can be late-bloomers, so I'm not worried.

Evie is still quite the character. Even out in the main coop, she still comes running when anyone goes out to her. he's definitely a social butterfly! Jacki, now Jackson, has been accepted by the current head rooster (Captain Cuddles) and is fully integrated with the rest of the flock. That numbers two hens (Beauty and Miss Piggy) and the three pullets - Evie, Iris and Belle. Cecil is now up at the Cecil County School of Tech (CCST) and will soon be the master of his own little mixed flock.

CCST is taking my young Sebrights, too. As soon as they're gone, hopefully this week, I'll have a free coop and mini-run. I hope to isolate Pepper and Yosemite Sam, our two best birds, in hopes of some peeps in the Spring.
We haven't had very good luck with hatching, this year. Maybe it's because the hens were so young. Maybe it's because the roe-combs are notorious for poor fertility rates. Maybe it's because of the incredibly awful heat and rain, this summer. Or maybe it's just because of my own inexperience. Most likely it's a combination of all of them. Regardless, we've only gotten seven chicks out of three hatches. Still, that's seven more than the world had, last year, so I'll count my blessings!

I'll try to get some pictures in the next few days. Marching Band season has started, so we're always running somewhere. Tomorrow, however, is the annual Blessing of the Animals at church - and we're taking our own parade ... two dogs, a cat and three roosters ... all on leashes. Ought to be fun!

Its been awhile! Well first off, 3 cockerels don't get along lol i had read they do - soooo - one boy has the girls, other boy diapered runs in the livingroom, and then the third boy has attached himself to me, so when i am working he is generally on my shoulder- makes doing art a challenge lol but i am thoroughly amazed at this breed- soo pic overload- first is my shadow Mendel - he is now 6 months old and has a little serama that he hangs with part of the time, but is more a mamas boy-

next is this boy that runs the livingroom lol he is not breed standard obviously- but has a sweet nature - he likes gaming with my husband

i still have the crossbeak, which isn't that major- goofy looking but eats on her own- i'll get more pics- overall amazing breed

It' so great to hear from you! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with spoiled "house chickens!" My three boys finally moved outside, but they still come back regularly for visits. I love having them nap on my shoulder while I work!

Yukon, my OEGB, is a gamer too, just like your hubby's buddy. He likes to play the "cat games" on the computer - the ones where they can chase the butterflies and mice. It's pretty funny! Except for the red comb and pale face, the two boys even look alike. Yukon is a red pyle, with dark red shoulder patches, just like your youngster. I think they're both gorgeous!

I think that picture confirms the suspicion of an OEGB out-cross at the hatchery! While that may not be the best scenario for starting a show line, personally, I think it may be a good thing for the long-term survival of the breed. There are so few Nankins left that a bit of new genetics, cautiously introduced and selectively bred back out, may actually strengthen the gene pool in the long run.

Regardless, your babies are beautiful ... all of them!

oppps here is yittel - not really a crossbeak, kind of a twist lol

we ended with 4 girls and 3 boys
You did better with your first batch than I did. The boys ended up winning with me - six to three! I'm so glad Yittel did well (I still LOVE her name!) I know you were a bit worried about her, at first. What a sweetie!
