Hi Everybody! We haven't checked in for a bit, so I figure it's time for an update ... maybe? How are everybody's babies doing?
My youngsters are now almost the same size as their parents. We haven't gotten any eggs, yet, but Nannies can be late-bloomers, so I'm not worried.
Evie is still quite the character. Even out in the main coop, she still comes running when anyone goes out to her. he's definitely a social butterfly! Jacki, now Jackson, has been accepted by the current head rooster (Captain Cuddles) and is fully integrated with the rest of the flock. That numbers two hens (Beauty and Miss Piggy) and the three pullets - Evie, Iris and Belle. Cecil is now up at the Cecil County School of Tech (CCST) and will soon be the master of his own little mixed flock.
CCST is taking my young Sebrights, too. As soon as they're gone, hopefully this week, I'll have a free coop and mini-run. I hope to isolate Pepper and Yosemite Sam, our two best birds, in hopes of some peeps in the Spring.
We haven't had very good luck with hatching, this year. Maybe it's because the hens were so young. Maybe it's because the roe-combs are notorious for poor fertility rates. Maybe it's because of the incredibly awful heat and rain, this summer. Or maybe it's just because of my own inexperience. Most likely it's a combination of all of them. Regardless, we've only gotten seven chicks out of three hatches. Still, that's seven more than the world had, last year, so I'll count my blessings!
I'll try to get some pictures in the next few days. Marching Band season has started, so we're always running somewhere. Tomorrow, however, is the annual Blessing of the Animals at church - and we're taking our own parade ... two dogs, a cat and three roosters ... all on leashes. Ought to be fun!
