Nankin Bantams

Pics
will keep watching my crew, friendly buggers, one loves to hop on the phone to look as his siblings in the screen lol Hand turning i think will be better, it is with seramas lol Maybe have the bator close to the other chickens so they can hear them talking? Technology is a pain for sure
Yup, the incubator is right next to Evie and her crew. The egglets hear constant chick-chatter all day long!

awesome! Loveit, egglets! lol

Eight eggs officially on lockdown! Twenty fingers crossed!

AND ...

DD took three Nannies and five other bantams to the Cecil County Fair, today. It's a good sized show for a county fair, but there is no Nankin class, so they had to compete in the "feather-legged bantams" category with a load of Silkies and other gorgeous birds. Her Nankin hen took Open Reserve Grand Champion. One of her Nankin roos placed second in his class ... the other took both 4H and Open Grand Champion and BEST IN SHOW!
One of the judges has Nannies, too and said that her three there "blew (his) away!" He offered to buy either one, point blank. Since we are still at the beginning of our breeding program, they aren't for sale, but we may make a trade later on, just to improve bloodlines. I am SO PSYCHED! What an AMAZING DAY!

And to top it all off - we have a brand new hatchling in the bator, today! We weren't expecting them to start until tomorrow, so this was a surprise. We're calling him/her Cecil/Cecilia, in honor of Sammy's (Yosemite Sam, cause as a peep, he was a rootin' tootin' redhead) !) wins, yesterday.

I think I'll contact the local paper and see if they want to do an article on the three "Critically Endangered Chickens" that swept the County Fair, Opening Day. THAT ought to get the breed some attention, ya think?
I'll have to coordinate with DD when she checks in tonight. She has officially moved into the Dairy Barn with her Guernsey heifers for the week. If past years are any indicator, I'll have one tired, happy young lady by next weekend's close!

Wow! They're growing fast!
Our 'bator-backup hatch was very disappointing. We had two duds, one live hatch and five that died in the shell. Some didn't survive the transition to the incubator. It looks like the auto-turner went south on us earlier than we realized. because a few made it a little further before quitting. What a heartbreaker.

On the "up" side, Miss Piggy has stuck it out, this time, and is currently midway (ish) through her set. It looks like she swiped a few while we were at the Fair. Either that or her sisters made random deposits while she tended to necessities, because she started out on about seven, but is now sitting on eleven! We'll have to wait and see how many are viable. It looks like she means business, this time, though. I moved her nest from her little hidey-hole corner to a regular nesting box, and she moved with them without a fuss. Fingers crossed, yet again.

Of the six in the grow-out pen, it looks like we've got two "roolets," two pullets and two undecided, as of yet. Then we have Cecilia (Cecil?) the lone hatchling from this last batch. Every time we hear a peep, someone is over there talking to or holding it. That little baby is going to be some kinda spoiled, I'll tell ya!

Another bonus from the Fair - I have a home for one young pair, already. One of our 4H buddies really wants them. Actually, it's her Dad who wants them, but he won't admit it. She's leaving for college in the fall and he wants something to write back and forth about. It's cute! Another fellow from Southern Maryland wants to line-trade for a grown rooster, so we're getting them out there, finally!
