Nankin Discussion Thread

They are very talkative and tolerant of people and other pets. One girl was broody late last summer and took exception to the dog getting too close to the coop and would chase after him, jump into the air and try to peck his butt.

Post Office fiasco #2! I received an email from Mary Ann Harley of SC that she was sending my 25 Nankin chicks out on Monday. They were guaranteed to come in by 3 pm on Tuesday. No chicks arrived :(. I was getting upset after having dealt with the last fiasco, where my birds were lost in the mail for 3 days. Three of the 10 arrived dead, and the others were in bad shape. BUT this batch of 27 tiny chicks arrived today, one day late, all doing well! Mary Ann had cut up an orange and put that in with the chicks :). I think that's what made the difference! Kudos to Mary Ann, and here's hoping the chicks stay strong and well!

One of my Lund Poultry Nankin cockerels. He's 2 months or so old now, still sporting that scruffy teenaged look...lol.

Here is the same bird with 3 of the 27 Nankin chicks that arrived yesterday from Mary Ann Harley. All are doing well!

One of the Nankin chicks that arrived at my house yesterday from Mary Ann Harley. That's a Wyandotte egg next to him/her.

Glad you got some chicks doing well. Trouble with getting birds in the mail, they show up so weak.
We had a bit of a close call here with my roo Clyde. The big EE roo decided to do him in. My DH happened to spot the trouble and intervened. He is recovering and wounds have scanned over but he is registered to show the end of April. Hope he heals fast.

Love the pica by the way.

So sorry to hear about Clyde! I hope he heals up quickly.

I was really amazed at how strong these chicks were even after being stuck in the mail for an extra day. They still had a little bit of the orange left and quite a bit of feed. I was SO happy!

Keep us posted on the eggs! I hope to let my hens go broody next spring and let the girls hatch them.

Also, does anyone happen to have an old copy of the Standard they no longer want? I really need a copy and all our money has been going into buying birds and building coops. I don't have the 50 dollars to spend on one at the moment. I am guessing the standard for Nankins hasn't changed over the years. My address is:

I will reimburse for postage.
