were you able to get the temp down? it will probably be ok because it is day one. it kind of depends on how long the temp was that high. good luck.

The temp went down right away and is hanging around 100-102 - light bulb on opposite side of bator to the eggs, thermo is in middle. How long is too long??? Thanks for responding!! Also, rotated the eggs in rows closest to bulb with back row and put very small drop of H2O from inside bator on each egg.

I think if it hovered there for half a day I would wonder if they were cooked. If it went right down you are probably ok. is the bator in the house? do you have a cellar that is a little bit cooler? if the air temp was cooler where the bator is located, the temp inside the bator will be lower.

hens get off the eggs to eat. the eggs cool when that happens. if you ever have a spike again, remove the bator lid for 5 or ten minutes to cool the eggs. the eggs are porus. if you put water on them it will go into the interior of the eggs. you don't want the air cell to fill with water.

you can cover part of the water tray with alumium foil. if you decrease the surface area of the water, you will decrease the humidity. remove the foil when you want the humidity high for the hatch. I dry hatch. I add water when the humidity reaches 25%. I raise it to 30%. when the humidity is extra high ( august in NH). I will run the bator without water. if the humidity in the air lowers, then I add water. I have had many 90 to 100% hatches doing this. somewhere on byc is a great thread on dry hatching. that is where I learned this technique originally.

Thanks.

OK.... Does the humidity have to be below 30% to dry hatch or is it OK to go from where I am right now? I put my FBCM in the bator a week ago, is it to late to try what you are doing? I haven't put my Ameraucanas in because I was worried about the humidity on my other bator (right now at 43%). I'm going to go ahead and put my Ameraucanas in then. They should be OK at 43% right or do I need to wait till they are at 30%?

I read that you let them sit for 12-24hrs at room temp, then put them in the incubator and don't turn them until day 3 so the air sacs may reattach. I'm new though- this is just what I read. Sounds logical to me so it's what I'm doing. Day 3 starts tomorrow morning!

I put in lavendar Ameraucanas, lav Orps, Appenzellar Spitzhaubens, Naked Necks and some Game chicken eggs.
In my other bator I set 10 French Toulouse geese.

Bator is homemade so I've been fine tuning the temp - thought I had set it before I ordered the eggs! It's in the house. I'm too nervous about moving it to the basement, but I think I will next batch. Kinda worried about it being too cool.
I put the water on the middle of the egg - hope that's a little safer, I won't do it again!

you can range from 25% to 35% with no problem. in nature the humidity is constantly changing. we are trying to create natural conditions in the bator. if we do a good job, the hatch is good. take off the lid for 5 minutes and put a small piece of foil over some of the water. add ameraucana eggs and leave alone till tomorrow. if the humidity is still too high, add more foil tomorrow. when I figure out the correct size for the foil, I use that size for the whole season.

good luck this is only my second time setting eggs and was not planning on setting 50. Went to a friends to visit and ended up buying some eggs from here the other day. I told her I was not ready but did it anyway. what are friends for LOL.

I have them in a LG still air at 99.5 and I cover the top with a towel. Just heard the sunlight on them while in bator is not good and do not have a spare closet to put them in. Well I could use my craft room closet but it has my craft stuff in it and the room is a mess thanks to DH for putting crap in there that does not belong LOL

keeping fingers crossed for you.

thanks for that tip.. just took the towel off. I have my Lg thermometer that says 99.5 and my thermometer I bought at wall mart that is a temp and humidity and it says 100 so doing good so far.
Just trying to get my Leahy Manufactured Incubator set right so I will not have to fix it again. Hubby found this old bator at a trade days we had a month ago. Its a really nice red wood cabinet with windows on the sides and front for you to be able to see the eggs and chicks. Thinking of using it for the brooder

I put a towel over the curtain rod or closed the curtains. I ran 3 bators for 5 months last year. kept the towel over the window and had no tep spikes in any bator.

i have blinds on my windows guess I need to see if I have a dark sheet i can put on the window. problem is, where they are at its also the office but its mainly me in here. Dh is gone a lot and the girls have their own lap tops. I just have a lamp on right now. what I might do is fine some dark material and just lay it over the window area of the bator that will work just fine. Now to get my eggs room darken and into some egg cartons to help turn 50 eggs a lot easier they will be some happy eggs/chicks
