Need Advise , First Flock got a chicken with a runny beak and "bubbly" crusty eye SICK SILKIE

Hello Everyone,

I am going on my 8th day as a new chicken flock owner.

So far so good ive even gotten a few eggs from the Egyptian f chicken that are real tasty.

I am having one problem I dont have the skills to fix though.

One of the silkies I bought I found had a real bad runny beak and bubbly eyes that would not open.

In the morning her beak would have a big hard snot trail stuck to it and she would sneeze about every 30 seconds and follow around the other chickens not having these symptoms.
That Silkie is no longer with us but she was quarantined with another Silkie.

The second silkie after 5 days of appearing healthy now has the same symptoms.

She has a loss of energy, very filmy eye's in the morning, discharge from her nostrils.

Total a sick silkie has been in the flock for a total of 2 days over the past 8 days and none of the other big birds are showing any symptoms only the silkies.

I would return the birds or complain but gas and commute times make it a no deal to visit a chicken vendor im not using again.

Thank you for any advise you can offer on how to fix this chicken, Right now she is running around with the other healthy Dominique's and Egyptian fayomi .

I am thinking Merck's ? or a respiratory infection.

They might have respiratory problems.

Stopped by a few feed stores and looked at what was easy to come by around here.

One left me with a bottle of vetrx, after looking at the ingredients and it is entirely oil , does seem like its only for symptoms.

Another feed store had an orange metal packet of something starting with a T that made 500 gallons and was an antibiotic, looks like ill probaly need to pick some up maybe.

Mareks would show paralysis.Likely respiratory.CRD or coryiza.Can be treated.Myself I destroy anything that gets sick.Most respiratory diseases are a virus and recovered birds are carriers.Viriuses can become active again during stressful times like winter.

Vet RX is not an antibiotic. They need an antibiotic for respiratory, Most people like Tylan in the water and make sure they are drinking. ASAP. And it's contagious.

There are quite a few respiratory diseases chickens can come down with. If you Google "poultry respiratory disease" you'll get an idea of whats out there. It's very hard to diagnose what they have since many symptoms are similar in the different diseases. All the birds in your flock are most likely going to come down with whatever this is. They need to be kept warm, especially at night until they are doing better and yes, it really is best to get them on a course of antibiotic's. Most poultry respiratory diseases are viral so the meds won't cure them BUT they very, very often morph into pneumonia and secondary bacterial infections, hence the need for antibiotic's. They will also remain carrier's of whatever this is even after they have recovered. So if you should loose one it would be a good idea to have a necropsy done, possibly by a state lab if possible, to help you identify what you are dealing with. That way you can vaccinate new birds.

Thanks for the advise everyone, Ive re isolated the sick chick and will try to track down some tylan 50. I'm off to a great start with my first flock here I should probally cull and start over with some incubating eggs this time. I bought from a guy who hatches ideal hatchery eggs, probaly had 200+ chickens and other birds running around he hooked me up good with this crud.

We all learn as we go.I started out medicating birds.Quit once it kept coming back during stress.I narrowly escaped tragedy this year.My grandson bought barred rocks at the sale barn on 3 occasions.All in isolation when the last ones started coughing up huge clots of blood.Larengo!Killed all the barred rocks and crossed my fingers.No cases since.My first experience with larengo in 40 plus years with chickens
