Nevadans?

Geeze Kim, I am so sorry. Have you thought...like...REALLY thought about going with her? So sad, im so so sorry :(

I feel crummy whining anymore but if not here then where??

WILL THIS EVER END?!?!

I went to check on Gunda because i noticed that she hasnt really been eating and her crop was completely empty! she feels like she is losing weight and she wont touch her feed. I have no clue what her problem is. The empty crop feels normal, she doesnt seem to be egg bound, she doesnt look ill at all. I havent the slightest clue what could be wrong! im stumped! She has been spending a lot of time in the coop. How do i get her to eat something?

AND THEN holy moly this is the worst...I found Mama hiding in a corner...unusual to say the least as she is very outgoing... picked her up (i had just checked on her ten minutes earlier and she was fine) and saw that SOMEONE HAD PECKED OUT HER EYE!! :hit I am at my wits end right now with these poor birds! Now keep in mind, none of these guys are overly aggressive, even to newbies. Im thinking that since she was in the coop she was eating and someone meant to peck her head and accidentally got her right in the eye ball. There is no pecking or scrapes anywhere else. I am at a loss. This really is a new one for me. I am hoping it will heal and she will just be one-eyed. But I am also worried because I cannot give her antibiotics . AUGH!! poor Mama!!!

Boy, poor mama....and poor Aubrey. Heartbreaking to read your earlier post with such relief, to be followed by this. I'm so sorry. We had a dog that got kicked by one of our colts and lost his eye. We took him to UC Davis but they had to remove the eye. He lived years with one eye. Once he learned to adjust for not having sight on that side (he ran into things at first), he did just fine, you'd never have known he had lost his eye. Keep it clean and mama will be fine.

Kim, proud of you for always putting your kids/grandkids best interest above yours. I can't imagine how hard it would be to let her go.

Kim & Aubrey What a day and life you are both having. Kim know how super hard it is to leave where you are but seriously I think it's time before something happens to you and everyone living there. Perhaps Union City would be great for you as well? idk

Aubrey, go to Green's Feed and pick up some antibiotic ointment for the eye. I think I actually see her eyeball so it may not be so bad after all. Are you sure it wasn't one of the roosters? Perhaps they thought she didn't belong anymore? idk

I'm taking the 17th off from work so I'll available for the show much of the day. I'm going to sleep in a bit since I won't be off work until around 1am and then I'll meet up with everyone. Now to find my shirt.

Oh my! So much going on around here! Cute costumes!
Poor chicken mama!!!

Missy, I was driving on Plumas last weekend and saw what appeared to be some rhode island reds pecking around in the gutter! I couldn't stop but praying they found their way to safety! Wondering if that is same group you are speaking of? I'm at chicken capacity!
By the way...... Tinker"bell" is indead tinker"dude"!! And very proud!
I'll post a pic when I get on my computer.

Was it my end of Plumas or the south end? The chickens I'm referring to are locked inside a house, but there are a LOT of chickens running around here. A friend told me about a house on Lakeside that always has chickens in the road. This really worries me, part for the chickens and part for city laws. I love that we can have chickens, but the same rule applies to them as dogs or any other animal. Keep them locked up! If we all start living like a 3rd world village and let all our chickens run around pooping on the streets with the other animals, city council might just decide to do something about chickens in general.

How is Hercules doing? Do you have two roosters now, or more?

Good news, I hope, for the Ames family!!! I have been offered a deal that's about 90% guaranteed.

My dentist's wife is a good friend of mine, and the family has been an amazing asset to us. Most of the materials for my chicken coop and greenhouse were donated by them. We have a deal where our insurance pays for most of our dental work, and whatever's leftover is paid by gardening, massage for the wife, and unlimited eggs. They were Garden #3 this year.

Anyway, the dentist office is on Lakeside, about 2 blocks from my house. They currently rent half of the building to another dentist, who is moving out to his own building soon. (That's the part that's not guaranteed... his building might fall through and he might not get to move immediately.) My dentist's business has expanded so much that they don't want to re-rent that end of the building, and his assistants want to stop going into the basement to file papers or make crowns. So they intend to move the offices to the other side of the building and expand the operatory stuff (dentist drills and cleaning equipment) on one side. And they offered to let me have one of the rooms on the office side. RENT FREE!!! (I'd offer the staff a few free massages a month, though.)

If this happens, we can turn my current office into a bedroom, and Joe can move out of the hallway! I can move either my canning into the hallway, and out of Sahara's bedroom, or my art stuff there out of the living room. And for those of you who have seen my house... my living room is about the size of two vans set side by side. Plus, I have a chance of expanding my business with clientele from the dentist's office. It's on the opposite end as the drills, and my friend says I can use all the aromatherapy I want to make it a more inviting atmosphere. I can probably also sell my soaps in the lobby, and having a market for that will let me expand into lotions or this laundry soap recipe that I've been working on.

The only problem: hopefully my clients don't have a phobia of dentists.

Oh, and to those of you who are ok with your chickens being "rehomed" to sustain another animal's life... I don't know if I mentioned before, but I have a friend with some huge snakes. Beautiful ones! At the reptile show on Saturday, I saw Molly, one of his pythons... she's 20 feet, 150 lbs, and at least 8 inches diameter at the thickest. His wife says they will gladly accept any chickens that need to be "rehomed", since it can get expensive buying rabbits for them.

But it's all up to how you feel about this. Unfortunately, we all know what happens to most roosters anyway.

Poor Mama! Unfortunately, this sort of stuff happens, especially with birds that are an nth away from being total scavengers. I think you could put some topical antibiotic ointment on the eye. Most medicine cabinets should have some, especially if you're in a home with dogs. DO NOT attempt to put hydrogen peroxide or Bactine on the eye to cleanse it. If you must, water. Water only. And then a good dollop of antibiotic ointment.

And then isolation until she's fully on her feet again and not feeling puny.

That's just my $.02 home vet advice speaking....

Thanks guys! as i said ive flushed it with saline solution and applied antibiotic eye ointment (terramycin). Today she seems alright. The eye bugs her a lot but shes eating and thats most important! I think Gunda may be egg bound but im not certain. I felt one up in there so i put food coloring in her vent and will see if she lays it. If i dont get a green egg by tomorrow then ill know the problem!
