Nevadans?

Missy!! We canned for the first time. My mom got some blueberries, and we made two batches of blueberry jam. The first one was perfect, the second was a little runny. It all tastes amazing though!! and its all natural. It's an exciting milestone for us, I thought I'd share it with you.

Yay! It's all high-speed to insanity from here. And the runny stuff makes GREAT pancake syrup.

It's been FOREVER, but I am ready to rejoin y'all! I had given my flock to a girlfriend last summer when work got a bit overwhelming, but things have changed for the better and now I'm on the (much happier) path to good old suburban homesteading (also considering homeschooling ...but that's another beast entirely)!

Goals at the present: refill the coop with a half dozen chooks, invest in a meat rabbit trio, and cobble together a mini hoop house for the backyard. We're only on a third of an acre, but I'm determined to utilize every square foot of it!

So, everyone...if you've got any hatching eggs/chicks or bunnies that you are looking to part with in the Reno area, send me a PM

. Otherwise, I will chat with you all soon. I've got lots of reading to do to catch up!

I could hook you up with meat rabbits. I currently have 3 that I just weaned, but I haven't checked gender because we are just breeding for meat as well. The problem with them is they are full siblings, with the possibility of a little shared genetics in the parents. BUT... I just had a second batch born last Monday, which are completely unrelated to the older ones. They won't be ready to go for 6 weeks.

If you want to breed soon, though, I'd look for a mature trio. New Zealand aren't ready for breeding until almost a year old. But our babies have been handled regularly. It's a little nicer when you take rabbits in and out of cages to have some that don't shred your arms with their claws because they're so scared.

The way my husband and I see it... if we could sell them for something comparable to the value of the meat we'd be getting from them... well, either way we're profiting. And I'm always open to trades, too. Most of our good stuff comes from bartering. If you want to talk money, just PM me!

P.S... ever consider ducks? A friend and I are doing a hatch for another friend, and we're looking for potential homes in case we get a super good hatch (more than the other friend needs). I could take some and raise them up to eating size, which is really only about 6 weeks. If you want any ducklings, all I ask is that they go to an educated home.

I think I'll take you up on the offer with this new batch. The older 3 are from parents that might even have a little Flemish giant in them, and two have a total lack in color. Both parents of the new batch, though, are pedigreed.

LaceyNoelle, come over for coffee!!! I love meeting our neighbors, and as the weather warms up everyone has been more and more out and about. PLEASE stop by! I live on Birch near Arkansas.

2seth2, I got them from a woman named Hillary. I was actually LOOKING for just plain Easter Eggers, but she says these are Ameraucanas. I am not picky, as long as they lay colored eggs! They are sweethearts, too, and have obviously been well handled and cared for.

We are now stocked for chickens, after losing one to the dog (to be fair, she took the mean little bugger who pecked my feet), but if all of these turn out to be pullets I think we will get a rooster. For the occasional pretty feathers and hatchlings next year! I will probably aim for an Easter Egger or Ameraucana Roo, I saw a black and white EE roo that was LOVELY!!!

Here are a bunch of pictures from our weekend coop-building extravangaza;

I've been lurking for a while, the chickens are doing nicely, look at my avatar! They're going in their run all day now, waiting for a warm night to come around the bend so I can stick'em in the coop.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hi, and show off my new avatar.

Nice pics, looks like you are making progress!

How about a Black Ameraucana roo? This is Poppy - not exactly tame but he won't attack you, either. He knows who the Alpha roo is!

Hey Seth. You can have my Wheaten, but he does have a slight curly-toe problem that wouldnt be ideal for breeding. He's bound for the freezer soon. The Blue Wheaten I'm keeping for a breeding project, but I have no objections whatsoever towards you housing him for a couple weeks so he can breed with your girls. What I do ask is a couple chicks in return from him, because I didnt get any wheaten or blue wheaten hens. I also have two lavender roos (Keeping one, eating one), and a big black one like Ron's. (Keeping) I don;t have any lavender hens, but I did score and get two black hens.

DarlingMommy, are you free Wednesday morning?

If you can't sell all of your seedlings, let me know and I'll ask my network. A lot of people are REALLY excited about a Farmer's Market that offers actual local produce.

The bad news is our truck broke down...

Funny... Our truck broke down too. We had it all loaded with stuff to haul over to the Farmer's market but it wouldn't start. Steve went and got a new battery but that wasn't it. We'll try the starter next.

Most of the seedlings did sell. I have some lettuce and spinach starts left but the tomatoes, eggplants, melons etc... went fast. The romaine lettuce went as well and about half of the other lettuces and spinach varieties were sold too. I was selling them for really cheap though. Just trying to use up all the seed so it didn't go to waste. I have a lot more tomatoes to divide though and some other stuff. I thought I'd have plenty of leeks too but it looks like I have enough for our family only. We use a lot of leeks due to my onion allergy and the seeds were left over from last year so only about half of them sprouted.

What are your friends looking for specifically? What I have a lot left of is the Chocolate cherry tomato plants. I didn't get around to dividing them up so there are lots of them plus I may have a few extra of the Reisentraube yellow tomatoes. Both of them grow well without a lot of fuss and are delicious tomatoes. I'll be starting a lot of the normal Beefsteak like tomatoes soon. They mature a little faster than some of these Heirloom varieties so I start them a little later. They pop up in just a few days to a week so they will be ready to plant in 4 to 8 weeks.

Anyone that gardens up here keeps them protected until the middle of June though. We've had some late freezes in June for a few years now.

As for the wind, let's put it this way: I'm really wishing I had a wind turbine generator right now!

I can relate to that!

Sorry I havent been back in so long. I have Banties-mostly mixed breed but a few PB. My Fav is a frizzle cochin. Meralee

I just adore my frizzled cochin girl.

I love frizzle cochins! Someday, I'll have a frizzle cochin.

You want me to try and save you one? Well maybe the ducks are enough to concentrate on for the next month or so.

1,771 pages of Nevadans!

I love that the chat is about the wind; my man was also lamenting that we don't have wind turbines set up yet! We moved her in September, and we are slowly 'green' ing our lifestyle. He's a mechanic, so the motors and mechanical projects are his favorites. He's making our coop this weekend! Luckily we have a big garage, or I'm certain the wind would have ruined all of our plans.

Nice to meet everyone!
Hi DarlingMommy! Welcome to the Nevada Thread!

Fun!! Wish I had found this thread earlier! I'm in lil' old Dayton NV. It's awesome to see so many of the chicken obsessed near me... I caught chicken flu after I got out of the navy a couple years and there is no going back. My heart belongs to the imported English Orpingtons... I also have peafowl. Anyway... HI!
Hi Christabelle! Welcome to the Nevada Thread!

Just stopped in to say hi. "HI!"

I wish some of you were close that want o hatch, cause I have dozens of eggs and nowhere to put them. I've given 2 dozen to each of my nextdoor neighbors and have orders still to fill for the Marans, but from no eggs to 3 dozen a day!! Gonna have a lot of hard boiled eggs for easter. To bad I only get white eggs from 5 birds! But Makayla and Elayjah should have enough to color.
They're coloring eggs? I had folks at the Farmers Market buying my eggs for Easter because they were already a rainbow of colors that they didn't have to dye!

I know you have most of the same colors I have.

And plenty of others they don't have to color!

That's for sure!

I need to refresh my flock. I only have 3 left out of the original 10 I got three years ago. Guess I'll be heading to the feed store soon!

I have 3 hatches coming up. 1st one is due in 2 days then two more by the 3rd of April. I have EEs, Lav/black split Orps (mix of American and English lines but that describes almost all Orps from breeders these days. These girls are much bigger than hatchery Orps though. I also have blue cochins that should be half frizzled but not many of those are in there and, of course, marans (FBCMs only).

Are you talking about me, Seth? or Lacy Blues? (I've got a Wheaton and a Blue Wheaton roo,)

Darn! I am looking for a Wheaten Ameraucana roo myself.

Yum Yum! Loooove blueberry jam!

I have a hatch in the bator right now that is ready to pop. About half of them are spoken for but I should have extras. Then I have 2 more hatches due within a few days of them (the last one due April 3rd). Won't be hatching for a month after that cause I'm hatching ducks for a friend.

See my post to Ron above for the varieties I should have.

BTW these Orp girls are soooo friendly! I don't have any aggressive birds left in the flock but the marans and the ameraucanas are still shy birds. They do come running when I am filling feeders/waterers or have treats but they stay out of my way if I show up empty handed.

Sooooo.....Got a BQ or SQ Black???? This one will do too. LOL

Sunny when you're 7 and 4, you have to color some eggs. I'm saving all the Game eggs. Only ones that are white other than the bantams. There's blue and brown in there too, so whatever they want to do, the same result will happen. Deviled!

I can't wait till the Easter hatch goes into lockdown. I've sold so many eggs that I wanted to hatch. I had 15 dozen the other day. Sold some and gave some away to the neighbors to eat. I' have eggs backed up from the weekend and collected 37 today. Oh and I caught one of the feral Game roos tonight! So happy about that. Lots more, but man that first catch was better than fishing! LOL
