Missy!! We canned for the first time. My mom got some blueberries, and we made two batches of blueberry jam. The first one was perfect, the second was a little runny. It all tastes amazing though!! and its all natural. It's an exciting milestone for us, I thought I'd share it with you.
Yay! It's all high-speed to insanity from here. And the runny stuff makes GREAT pancake syrup.
It's been FOREVER, but I am ready to rejoin y'all! I had given my flock to a girlfriend last summer when work got a bit overwhelming, but things have changed for the better and now I'm on the (much happier) path to good old suburban homesteading (also considering homeschooling ...but that's another beast entirely)!
Goals at the present: refill the coop with a half dozen chooks, invest in a meat rabbit trio, and cobble together a mini hoop house for the backyard. We're only on a third of an acre, but I'm determined to utilize every square foot of it!
So, everyone...if you've got any hatching eggs/chicks or bunnies that you are looking to part with in the Reno area, send me a PM. Otherwise, I will chat with you all soon. I've got lots of reading to do to catch up!![]()
I could hook you up with meat rabbits. I currently have 3 that I just weaned, but I haven't checked gender because we are just breeding for meat as well. The problem with them is they are full siblings, with the possibility of a little shared genetics in the parents. BUT... I just had a second batch born last Monday, which are completely unrelated to the older ones. They won't be ready to go for 6 weeks.
If you want to breed soon, though, I'd look for a mature trio. New Zealand aren't ready for breeding until almost a year old. But our babies have been handled regularly. It's a little nicer when you take rabbits in and out of cages to have some that don't shred your arms with their claws because they're so scared.
The way my husband and I see it... if we could sell them for something comparable to the value of the meat we'd be getting from them... well, either way we're profiting. And I'm always open to trades, too. Most of our good stuff comes from bartering. If you want to talk money, just PM me!
P.S... ever consider ducks? A friend and I are doing a hatch for another friend, and we're looking for potential homes in case we get a super good hatch (more than the other friend needs). I could take some and raise them up to eating size, which is really only about 6 weeks. If you want any ducklings, all I ask is that they go to an educated home.
