Nevadans?

well, I found my australorp dead this morning. I think if it had just been the prolapse maybe she would have had some chance of recovering but it looked like she was eggbound, too and the warm baths didn't seem to be working. Hopefully i won't have the same problem with my other australorps. I do like the breed. They are good layers and well behaved.

I've got 3 dedicated broodies right now. 1 australorp and 2 blrw. the blrw are sharing a nest box--the favorite nest box--and sometimes the other girls actually squeeze in there to lay.
I've had eggs running out of my ears. I can't even imagine having the winds you guy get in Reno. Man! My Marans pen which wasn't completed ended up on rabbit cages and my next door neighbor's shop roof. Nope, not a hoop coop either. Those things held up so well, I couldn't believe it. If I find land and no house I may put one together to live in! So for the past 2 or 3 weeks, I have had 3 pens of birds all over the backyard. I don't even want to think of what it's going to take to clean my patio and outside wall

So I had a little special and gave away over 100 eggs and still selling a bunch now. I have no room in the bators and I'm not going to waste anything. Speaking of incubators, I killed off more chicks. Found out I had left the vents completely closed. 3 hatches later and no chicks I ended up with chicks not strong enough to hatch. I got 3 out out of 61 eggs. OK, so were clears or had stopped, but that was probably due to the vents. I couldn't even get any that I tried to assist to make it. I was so mad at myself. I have 2 more hatches that may have been damaged from carbon dioxide. I hope not, but it's possible. The chicks that did hatch this time are extra loud. Wonder if that's from being gassed.

OK, just wanted to say hi. Now to figure out what all I have to sell.
sorry you've had some bad hatches. good luck on your next ones!

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
If the daytime temps are in the 90s and nighttime temps in the mid 60s, can the chicks start outside right away? I'll have a heat lamp for nights. Or, should I keep 'em inside for the first few weeks just in case?
With so many chicks, we'll be setting up a pen in our dining room if they have to be inside.
welcome!

Be prepared for mega dust from those chicks. Seriously, it will be everywhere.

I was going to post the link to the breeders page, but decided to just post what I have. I don't show, but I could. I spent over 4k the year my husband died buying hatching eggs from the top breeders. Since then I've added more breeds and nothing other than the Silkies came cheap. LOL I got them to use as broodies, but they aren't into that or even laying that often. Little princesses! But I do have SQ and BQ birds other than them. I have nice OEGBs, but they are a mixed color flock, since I just didn't want to give them up or add more. My FBCMs were my first great flock. Bill bought them for me a couple of months before he died. The original owners had bought them from Bev Davis, hatched out chicks and passed the original flock off. Anyway, these are what I have and I have a list on the California Whole State thread of what's available right now and also have them listed as BIN on the 24 hour auction thread. The prices are on that thread.

oh, Missy, sorry I forgot to pick up my potatoes. I will make a note for myself for tomorrow.  that's interesting that your australorp also had that. i have had eggs with blood on to. I guess that was from her. so she still looks the same but has been drinking water. I brought her a little bit of food.    She can turn around in the cat carrier so even though it is small, I don't feel too bad for one day.  I maybe can run out tonight to get something bigger and maybe some prep h.

Over the years we have had several australorp and x's that have bled to death after laying a triple yolker or even one of their regularly huge eggs! And those are the gurls whose eggs have blood spots (I thought they were speckled at first) their whole lives...
We figured it was because the regularly pump out such honkin eggs? Is there another theory?

Attention Northern Nevadans; I am desperately seeking HENS (not pullets) either Jersey Giants or RIR. I wouldn't mind taking a rooster of either breed (or Araucana/Americana) off your hands as well. Anyone willing to part or trade for them? Let me know price and availability! If not I'll have to do a late season hatching project, but I suppose there are worse things than hand raising baby chicks.

I am in South Reno for work/live in Lemmon Valley.

THANKS!

You northerners seem to have all the luck with rabbits!
I've been trying to find a breeding pair of meat rabbits for the past year... they're really hard to find in the Vegas area!

I don't believe I know of breeders your way. I know of people in SoCal and Arizona.
Ditto. There is a member on here (Cari - user name WhiteMountainsRanch) that breeds meat rabbits. She is in the San Diego area.
