Laminate is hard to install! You must be very talented! I was thinking about cork for the bathroom floor. That should be even easier than laminate.

OK! I'm thinking we need to have a weekend food and remodel party! I have room to put you all up (well, the local folks don't need a bed) I can feed you all and we will all stuff ourselves when we are done working. You can afford the calories after all that work.

I'm afraid my back kinda puts me in the same boat. I can paint though, as long as I don't bend over to do the floor trim. I can measure and cut base board and trim. I'll take a pain pill and dive in where I can. DH can handle a lot though. I just have to get him to take some time off work. He is much more motivated when there are others working around him.

As long as there are no drafts and they have room on the roosts to cover their toes I do not bother with heaters.

The only heat lamps I have going are in the brooder with the second batch of babies, but I have even cut back on their heat. They are outside from 9ish a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and then they get put back in the brooder but I have put it on a timer and the 250w lamps turn off at 6:30 p.m. and they only have two 150w reptile heaters above the roosting area. It keeps the roosting area from dipping down to 30 in there. But they are getting big enough that I am starting to wean them off of that this week. They have all of their feathers, I am just waiting for them to get big enough so they cannot walk through my fence and then they will go in with general pop.

The power goes out here a lot, especially in the winter and I would hate to have them used to the heat lamps and then the power go out and they are out there freezing their tails off because they are not used to the colder weather. I just do not want to take the risk of losing all of my birds because of the power going out.

I have a 60w light on a timer above their water from 4am to 8am. It doesn't stop the water from freezing on a really cold night but it slows it down some. Eglyntine is correct though. The lamps are not neccesary. The most important thing is a dry, draft-free space and a wide roost so their bodies can completely cover their feet. The lamp also keeps them laying some for the winter months.

I lost my Australorp rooster this morning. He was growing into a beautiful boy and I am so upset. I woke up this morning to him laying in the livingroom dead and one of my dogs was scavenging him. It was horrible. I do not think it was one of the dogs that got him originally. They have never attacked the chickens and lay out in the yard all day with the chickens literally walking over the top of them without the dogs even noticing so it is really hard to believe that they did the initial killing. Passing up an opportunity to finish him off I cannot put that past them but it just does not make sense that they killed him. At any rate I am devastated. The worst part is not knowing what did it because now I am paranoid about the rest of my flock. I wanted to start breeding them in the spring but that is going to be impossible without a rooster. I guess I am going to have to get that fence put up now else I am not going to be able to sleep without knowing they are somewhat protected. I could just scream right now! I think I am more upset that I only had one rooster, whatever it was out there could not have taken down one of the hens I had, they had to take the one and only Australorp rooster I had. I am SO SICK OF MURPHY!!!

If anyone knows anyone in the area that has any good stock Australorp roosters available for sale I would greatly appreciate it if you could let them know someone is looking for a rooster. Shipping is definitely an option as I do not know anyone locally that has any of them. I was thinking of adding some Aussie blood to my stock but I hear it is impossible to ship them these days but if anyone has any links or know of someone that could help please let me know. I would really rather not have to put in an order of 25 Australorp roosters from a hatchery if I can get away with it.

I posted over on the Australorp thread but we'll see what happens. I am more upset about losing him, he was so beautiful already, I cannot imagine what he would have looked like full grown.

We have one of those heat platform things that we set the metal waterer on

Eglyntine So sorry to hear about your Roo. My dogs got ahold of all of my silkies that we hatched and needless to say I have no more. I would gladly send you one of mine but our last Aussie roo became dinner because he was very aggressive with our chicks.

SunnyDawn I have a photo somewhere of me flipping my husband off as he was laughing at my laminate install. Needless to say I just do stained concrete overlay nowadays !

I am so excited, my coop is almost done now with only 3 days to spare before I head back east again for two more weeks. I will get to experience some of the snowy weather that you are all getting now !

If I can figure out how to post the pics of the coop I will get some up since I know some of you Love pics !

Try contacting sewngrow. She just got an Aussie for her grand daughter's 4H project and did a lot of research.

We're in the Central Valley in California, but a Reno trip might be fun. ohhh.....ice, salt, auto paint...hmmmm......Yeah we could figure something out.
