Thanks! I know, I was excited to see such dark first eggs. They may get lighter but they could also get darker. 2 of the eggs are too light but they have beautiful stippling. I hope those darken up! I sure didn't hatch any eggs that light. They will make great eating eggs if they don't.

Here are the cakes I made. They were fun to make and came out pretty good. I'm horrible at doing the lettering but oh well.

beautiful!
oh no!
Cute cakes!

Those are adorable!!! Lettering is very hard. I think you did a great job.

Nooooo ....It's the Game hen that's been hanging out. Just worried cause she's always out there and now no sign of her. the Sussex roo has a bloody comb and wattles, but the hen if fine. See I'm a confusing person.
Oh. That's a relief. Sorry don't mean to make light of it. I know you are very worried about that feral game hen but I am still relieved it isn't the new hen you just won.

Elizabeth those cakes look yum yum yummy! I'm gonna have to hire you to make a flamingo wedding cake!
Haha I thought you weren't having a cake.

Hey everyone, sorry I've been scarce lately. We finally finished all of 2012's goals, and I'm trying to take the time before planting season to catch up on my Tough Mudder training. I have so far to go! The first few months of any training period is so frustrating because you know you've been working hard and don't see ANY results... that's about where I'm at. And it takes so much time. But it'll all be worth it when Russ and I finish the event together.

Seth, will they be selling rabbits, or just showing? Russ and I definitely want another doe, one that's breeding age.

Sunny, I love the eggs. I miss seeing marans eggs. Someday, I'll have some.

Elizabeth, the cakes are beautiful!

My chickens need baths, too. I figure I'll wait until it's actually warm outside to do it. My ducks are super dirty. At least now, they don't have danger of freezing to the patio if they get wet.

Ok, I've got to get back off now. Tomorrow morning I'm teaching about 5 friends how to make bread, then in the afternoon I need to do another batch of cheddar cheese to get aging while my house is still cold.

Oh yeah... 25 eggs today, new record! Woohoo! We have 29 chickens/ducks, not counting the 2 drakes.

I haven't been on in a while with everything going on and trying to keep up is exhausting.
Anyway I just wanted to share that we got our first eggs from our (not so baby anymore) girls.

I have no idea which one(s) lay ed them but they were the cutest little eggs I have ever seen. I'm sure they will get bigger as the hens mature more otherwise we will need lots more eggs since these were a bit larger than an inch.
I'm not complaining though as I am really excited. I have a nest set up in there but they are not using it they just lay ed them where ever. Will they learn to use the nest or should I find a way to teach them???
My Geese are really obnochious with the warmer weather. They want their bath water right now and they won't simmer down till they get it. Oh and I think I may have a boy and girl. Gannet is very protective of Alex (which I guess is short now for Alexis!) and watches over her when she baths and eats. It's funny, since I removed all the male chickens the hens and geese have calmed down 90%. Anyway I just wanted to share in my good news. We haven't had any new eggs since but are hopeful.

I don't look for new eggs from just started to lay pullets for at least 3 or 4 days.

You can put their eggs in the nests, that will give them the idea to lay in there. It helps if the nest boxes are dark. First time they don't know what's going on and I imagine are quite curious about that thing that just landed behind them. As they mature, they'll know its coming and start looking for dark, secret places to to lay it.

I'm pulling Sumatra eggs out of dirt and mud. They're laying in their dust bowls they've dug. I pulled a Sunny and just stuck the one Dakotah and I found half submerged in mud last night. Maybe it will hatch better.

That's great. I'm finally starting to get eggs on a regular basis again. And they aren't freezing anymore so there has been less breakage. I've actually been able to fill 4 customers' orders in the last week.

Pullet eggs. Don't worry; they will get larger. As for training them I've heard of people putting plastic eggs into the nest box to get them used to that idea. But mine have always figured it out on their own.
