Nevadans?

Sunny, The rooster that is standing on the piano bench is the daddy of my rooster. No name on that photo. Don't know who is to the left of him. Freznels picture is just below that on my computer. Some browsers can change the arrangement of things though. At any rate He is a BRR Mottled. Whatever that means. Cannonball is a really nice looking rooster though. I really like that color. I don't really care for the mottled stuff myself but will live with it since Serama have such a hard time getting any certain color out of them.
My real hope is to get the hen to lay and set on at least some eggs. Incubating is not working all that well. I have had all of three eggs even get a decent start. of those one quit at day 10 and another at day 12. nothing in my records indicates it was the incubator but it could have simply been genetics or maybe bacteria. Not sure at this point. I know both chicks died 2 days after I candled them. I will not be candling this batch until day 18 and then only as I put them in the hatcher. They have to be moved anyway. I consider candling a needless risk anyway. it doesn't let you really do much even if you know there is a problem. Manly it is an anxiety reliever for a short time. I never really settle down til the chick is out of the shell anyway so really what is the point. And if it is causing my chicks to fail I can definitely live without doing it. I may have to borrow someone elses fingernails to chew on though. mine are all about gone.

I would like to set some on May 1st (Welsummer, Marans, and Delaware). PM me how much you'd charge for hatched out chicks and I will relay the info to the friend who wanted to go in on some Marans, cuz that way I can fit more eggs into my bator!

BTW what all do you have in the Marans pen? I know the roo is a Black Copper and you have a variety of Marans in with him...just for info so I can plot and plan out my next hatch.

evonne - I'm hoping I could get a few eggs from you too. I could probably pick them up at the same time as ke-ben's! I wish you could stop by and help me sex my chicks. I'm kinda on the way out of town (hah) okay at least I'm on the side of town closest to heading that way. I think of the EE's I have 4/6 are hens but that may just be wishful thinking. I gotta try again on the EE/Leghorn and blue EE eggs.

I have no idea what the two frizzle cochin chicks I have are.

SunnyDawn - That sounds like fun to me! We could put out 2 or 3 dates and whichever the most people can attend on could be the one. We could put in date suggestions or whatever ...?

Penturner - Good luck with the Serama Situation: hatch, Big Bird and the new big birds.

Peep_Show - Even without the plasma screen I love chillin' with the peeps! Love the idea of the milk jugs, though, and the Cinnamon Queens.

Knemeyer - Welcome! So glad to have another chicken person in LV! BTW, Delawares are supposed to be heat tolerant too. The middle section of one side of my coop swings up on a hinge to create major ventilation and additional shade. We have another smaller section that is removed in summer and have shaded part of the run. Our coop is made completely of recycled material so it looks a little ghetto but the birds seem to like it. My best advice is to plan well, do your best, watch your birds and adapt your plan as necessary!

Thanks for the update Penturner. I agree that Cannonball is a gorgeous rooster. Good luck with this batch.

Vegaschick I'll work on that this weekend or Monday. I think it would be a blast!

Ke_ben I know finding a date that works for everyone is impossible but all we can do is try to get some folks together.

Hopefully we can swap some eggs/chickens then too.

The Northern Nevada Poultry Fanciers Association is planning a Fall show at the end of November at the Reno Livestock Event Center. I'll post more info as the event is planned.

I really hope it happens this year - last year was cancelled due to fee increases at the Livestock Event Center. Briteday - do you help and do you attend the meetings at the Pizza place once a month (S. Reno I think - 3rd thursday)? I have been wanting to attend but am unsure if the meetings are still held.

The meetings are still at the Round Table Pizza at the south Reno Walmart parking lot area, 3rd Thursday 6:30...I just started going and seems like a really nice group of people. Once you get on the email list you will get a reminder for the meetings.

Wish I had known this last week. I was off work and would have gone. I know I have seen poultry shows at the livestock evens center before but was wondering just when it was. If there any others in the area I would appreciate knowing about them also.

And now in Serama News. This just in. Reno now has an genuine adult hen with reasonable promise for laying some fertile eggs. these eggs where fathered by a Rooster that will be going nose to nose with last years SCNA Champion this coming weekend. I just hope I can keep the hen laying and get some of those eggs to hatch. If not I have 12 eggs fertilized by that same rooster going in the incubator at 7 o'clock tonight. Sure wish I had someone with more experience right now. For me this is not the material you should be trying with. I would also feel better with a Brinsea incubator or something. I am still not certain that my incubation problems are not partially my incubator.

I will post pictures of the pair later. I am at work and my wife went to get them from the post office at 8 this morning. I did sneak by for a peak earlier and they are a beautiful buff colored pair. Buff is my third favorite color right behind black and then white. Very sweet birds. even though I know they are both terrified neither one made an aggressive move even in defense. Both ate and drank within minutes of being placed in their cage. I will introduce them to their outdoor area in the next few days when it warms up again.

At any rate this hen is a proven egg layer (which is not always so with Serama) The Rooster she was put in with before being shipped has proven fertility (also not always a given with Serama) The questions right now is weather she has been put off laying, if the eggs will actually be fertile and develop, and if she will maximize chances of hatching the eggs by going broody. Then being a new momma chances are not the best they she would set the eggs for the full 21 days. if any chicks come out of her or any eggs she lays in the next 13 days they are going to get a gold leg band. Just for flat out beating the odds. Even then Serama do not breed true for color so there is no telling what i will end up with. All I know right now is that there is a very slim chance of having some of the top genes in the country here on the west side. But sadly mixed with a not so genetically outstanding female. I like her though. she purdy.

Oh Yeah! The Hen layed her first egg 4 hours after being put in the cage. I can't believe that being shipped did not put her off laying at all. Talk about a golden egg. My plan right now is to take it out of the nest and replace it with a golf ball. I will then store the egg in the fridge at 48 degrees for 7 days or until the hen goes broody. anyone see a problem with that plan? I asked about it at the SCNA site as well. Man every time I think I start getting all the info I need together things take off like a rocket again. this first time stuff is a bugger. So if anyone has any guidance please speak up I am simply going by tons of stuff I have been reading the last few weeks.
On the flip side obsticals are falling pretty quick. it is now a matter of getting that egg to hatch. so far it has a 1 in 28 chance of that in my hands.
