Nevadans?

from what i understand, that is too cold.... i leave mine on the kitchen counter... and just to be safe if you know you want to hatch it, turn it a couple times a day.. just to be safe...
and don't plan on her going broody, i would plan on incubating it after about a week of collecting whatever else she lays....
i have 7 hens that have been laying age since sept-nov of last year, and only one of them has gone broody... if i had waited for that i wouldn't have any of my other chicks...

i don't know how broody serams as a breed are, but i don't think it happens often??

Evonne, Thank you. Nothing about Seramas in consistent. The eggs do not incubate well and 50% hatch rates are suppose to be good. Everyone I have talked to say that a broody hen is the best way by far. I have 12 eggs going into the incubator tonight so am adding this one to them. anything layed after today will have to be saved for a few days and then set. Also Seramas do not necessarily hatch in 21 days. it can be anywhere from 19 days to 26 days. So the answer to that is to have a second incubator as a hatcher and move the eggs as they pip. Catwalk did tell me she has had people get 80% hatch rate from her eggs even though they where shipped and incubated. that is unheard of though.

Penturner - wish I had been thinking - my little Ruby - bantam cochin - went broody last week, I would have given her duds and offered to incubate your eggs (oh, that might sound bad

). If you want, should I have anyone else go broody, I can slip a couple of your eggs under her and then give you the chicks upon hatching.

Storing in the fridge at 48 is too cold I believe also - I think I have read on here that those who store in fridges set the temp at 50 or 56?, plus you need to watch your humidity.

Shipping and rehoming still may put her off laying - the egg she laid today was "already in the works" and there is nothing she can do to stop it. I had a rehomed hen lay on the ride to here from CA when I got her (hatched that egg too!), she is a fantastic EE - mother of most of my EE crosses.

Soooo where are the pictures of the new kids? I want to admire their teeny-tiny-ness.

Evening everybody! Congrats Penturner on the new birds/egg and the safe arrival of the hatching eggs. Good luck to you.

If you know anybody that has a Genesis incubator or the 1502 sportsman (or something equivalent) you need to become their new best friend.

If you were a little closer I would be happy to help. The temp for short term storage shouldn't be any less than 55 F if you have a separate cooler you can set to that. Room temp is fine for a few days.

For your viewing pleasure, some 3 day old Lt. Brahmas.

That was about the best I could do, they like to move too much and I didn't have anyone home to help.

Thanks Horse feathers. I mentioned the idea to my wife and family and almost got evicted. I guess they have all been pacing the floor for me to get home so we could set the eggs. They don't have a second thought of giving it another try. If the hen does lay more eggs I will let you know and may take you up on the offer after all. I took them a hand full of Meal Worms tonight and we all seem to be much better friends now. they actually sort of complain if they see us heading out the door. They are actually starting to get restless so I sure hope the weather turns better soon.

Ken ben. them thar are the funniest lookin chickens I have ever seen.

Those babies are beautiful!

Of course, the girls all agree to fight over begging for a mini. Of course they were shocked to know that the ones they thought were the most marvelous were all the boys!

I think your right about the box, that was dumb... I use those for eggs...

If it works out, I'm wishing for three welsummer and three black copper marans....

( I already have several barred rocks and would like to keep a color variety) so not looking for cuckoo marans.

but

If the black copper marans are not as docile as the welsummer, then I wish for 6 welsummer.

hhmmm when will chops be old enough to breed?? he is a cutie... wonder what a mix of him and my kate would look like... lol...

penturner, if you want to hathc and raise the seramas and keep having issues with the bator, get yourself a couple of silkie hens... i hear they really are the best for brooding....

If you like him, you need to come see Crush and he is about old enough. I think that you will probably like Worf in person too. You still packing? I'm turning in.

Flowers of Abba did you look at the old posted pics? Those are girls, but today's pics didn't do the girls justice.

Good night all and thanks for the compliments. I did notice that nobody even noticed the birds though.
