Nevadans?

What do you currently have and what are you looking for? Great egg layers, nice temperment, handles weather well, pretty, pet?

Our current roster:

1 - Gray Easter Egger from Horsefetherz
2 - Red & Black Hen from Hmbrd
3 - Black & White Barred Rock from ??? on Mt. Rose Hwy.
4 - Golden Sex-link from 4-H chicken swap

We'd like to get egg layers. One white one, and one of anything else we don't already have. All of our birds roam around the yard when given the opportunity, and most are still a little skiddish of people. That doesn't really concern me. They all get along well, and that's what is important to us. That's why we want to introduce 2 at the same time. I think it might reduce the establishment of a pecking order right away.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi everyone - been MIA - no excuse, just lazy....

Off for 4 days - yahoo - but dh is working his 12 hr shifts Fri thru Mon - so he is missing out on Labor Day Weekend - he is also an RN (in the ER no less).

Olivia got another soccer goal last night - her team won 10-0- it was a shut out!

Taylor started school this week - taking 9th grade algebra (counts towards high school credit - she is in 8th grade). I think she will have a great year.

LaceyNoelle: What makes me, as a parent, happy - is also to see my girls happy and want to spend time with us parents. I love it when my daughters just spontaneously give me a hug & say they appreciate all that I do for them. I like it when they ask me how my day went - and if I had a good day. I love it when they leave me "love notes" - just a quick note to say hi, i love you... I also appreciate when they don't bug me for something everytime we go grocery shopping. I took my granddaughter (I also have an almost 28 yr old daughter who lives in Sacramento) shopping for school clothes at Kohl's and my 11 & 13 yr old did not ask for anything! I made sure I noticed that and thanked them for it. However, I also model this behavior - I wish them a great day before they go to school - or if I am not home (I have to be at work at 5 or 530 in the morning) I leave them a note. I tell them frequently that I love them & appreciate how good they are. I thank them when they do their chores promptly. I ask them to help me cook dinner - TV is off & we just talk as we make our dinner. I also appologize when I make a mistake or am unfair to them (and yes as a parent we do make mistakes!) I feel as if I am a pretty good parent.

My gals are doing well - faces are getting more red - Sassy's comb is getting more plump - hopefully eggs will be in the near future!

My project for this weekend is to put together my composting bin!

And maybe take my puggies to Pug Sunday - if it is cool enough.

Welcome to all the new folks! I love to see all the photos of the chickens - really wish I could get a roo they are soooo handsome.

Sunny: I thought of a name for your white hen but you already named it. I like the name Beignet (pronouced: Ben yay) it is a french donut/pastry that is served in New Orleans at the Cafe du Monde - it is heaped up with powdered sugar.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend

On a slightly different note, I thought I would show you something my girls will be volunteering for next week at the Oquendo Veterinary Center here in Las Vegas (home of the Western Veterinary Conference each February). This you tube shows how smart our chickens can be. 15 of my ladies will travel to the center near the airport to spend a few days teaching some students to learn how to clicker train. Click on this it will play for you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8wAqmQUpsg&feature=related

Leghorns (the white ones lay the best but aren't very pretty), Anconas and Minorcas are great layers of large, white eggs. Minorca don't do well in freezing temps though. My Rhode Island Reds and my Orps are my best brown egg layers. There are so many great varieties though once you branch out a little. If you don't care about super high production and/or are happy with a medium egg then your choices are much wider. BYC has a chicken breed chart here and you can access their breed selector tool from here as well. Good Luck!

SparksNV you are making me hungry with that Beignet pic!!! That is a great name! Now I need another white hen.

You should add that to the name thread. The link is above (or a page or so back).

That is awesome Holly! I don't care for video games but when my sons started going through that phase when they just wanted to hide in their rooms away from parents (about 14-15), I started showing an interest, just so I could have a little time with them each day. I didn't lie and say "I'm all into video games now" but I told them that I was interested in what they liked and wanted to understand it better. At first they looked at me like "what are you doing?" but soon they relaxed and started to show me how the games worked and their strategies etc. They even worked to find games that we both liked and it gave us a half hour or so each day to connect. I didn't realize how much they enjoyed my taking an interest in what they liked at this age as well.
Course now they are gone and they took the Wii with them! *sigh*

Ah, Yes, I hate the video games mostly, but he is only allowed to play games that require extra thinking - Build A Lot (violence includes demolishing buildings and putting up new ones), Professor Fizzwizzle, where you have to make Rue Goldberg (sp) mouse-trap game type machines to get the points, and a few classics like centipede and space invaders. He gets none of that violent blood and guts guns and grenades stuff. He also bought his own Wii on layaway and like the sports and races. He wants to make ME happy and get me the exercise Wii programs. I am not sure how to intrepret that.....

Well, I got my first eggs today!

Four of them - three small ones and one large one. Unfotunately, two of them were broken.

And one of the broken ones was the big one. It was a double-yolker! I guess that one was from one of the RSLs, eh?
