thanks for the offer, sheryl but I decided to just try growing the small sugar pumpkins this year. If I succeed at that, maybe I can try the larger ones another year. I'm going to put a few raised beds in the front this year where I get a lot of sun all day. we'll see how it works.
For those who are gonna do the bucket garden genius idea, I found the best place to get buckets today! I am now gonna try buckets because of how upset I was when I lost my first Garden last year to the frost and had to start all over. This way I can put them in the garage overnight if the weather gets crappy. I love the idea of a mobile garden! Anyways,I stopped at Super Burrito today and got 16, 5 gallon buckets free! I also called Both Costcos in town and I get to pick up more free buckets on Sunday from both stores and then I will have all I need.WooHoo,I cant wait to start. So Super Burrito and Costco will give free buckets FYI.
good job on the egg.
i just got in trouble for useing a profile pic i didnt own
post a picture of your meal worm farm please
That's what I decided to do as well... short-season sugar pumpkins so I can use them as food. Jack-o-lanterns are so cheap, and they're not good eating. I'm also doing 4 other varieties of short-season winter squash. We're really focusing on food storage this year.

Woohoo! I ran by Whole Foods to get a few ingredients for the early-Valentine's date night, and there were no buckets. I'm glad you found all you need. If we manage to get an overload of them, I'll gladly share. I know I'll need at least 15 more to do the driveway-potato rotation I'm planning... plant 10 buckets a month, until about 3 months away from the first frost. Fresh yukon golds and all-blue potatoes, monthly!
Ok, I decided on the menu. Thanks for all the suggestions! The entree is going to be a seared ahi tuna steak with a sesame/ginger rub, topped with a wasabi aioli. Side of wild greens with strawberry/lime/cilantro balsamic. Bread: freshmade from-scratch garlic sticks with roasted garlic butter. Dessert: Sheryl's cream puff recipe, filled with an almond-flavored custard and topped with a dark chocolate ganache and sliced almonds. Sparkling white grape juice to drink. And since my husband is a big fine-cheese fan, I got 2 kinds of goat gouda, and a pyrenese goat cheese with peppercorns, to slice up on the side. I threw away the receipts before he could get home.![]()
On a side note,I started my meal worm farm today! Its $6 for 500 young mealworms at Petco. I bought 1000 juveniles, and 100 adults to get me started. They seem pretty happy already.
