good job on the egg.

i just got in trouble for useing a profile pic i didnt own

post a picture of your meal worm farm please

thanks for the offer, sheryl but I decided to just try growing the small sugar pumpkins this year. If I succeed at that, maybe I can try the larger ones another year. I'm going to put a few raised beds in the front this year where I get a lot of sun all day. we'll see how it works.

That's what I decided to do as well... short-season sugar pumpkins so I can use them as food. Jack-o-lanterns are so cheap, and they're not good eating. I'm also doing 4 other varieties of short-season winter squash. We're really focusing on food storage this year.

For those who are gonna do the bucket garden genius idea, I found the best place to get buckets today! I am now gonna try buckets because of how upset I was when I lost my first Garden last year to the frost and had to start all over. This way I can put them in the garage overnight if the weather gets crappy. I love the idea of a mobile garden! Anyways,I stopped at Super Burrito today and got 16, 5 gallon buckets free! I also called Both Costcos in town and I get to pick up more free buckets on Sunday from both stores and then I will have all I need.WooHoo,I cant wait to start. So Super Burrito and Costco will give free buckets FYI.

Woohoo! I ran by Whole Foods to get a few ingredients for the early-Valentine's date night, and there were no buckets. I'm glad you found all you need. If we manage to get an overload of them, I'll gladly share. I know I'll need at least 15 more to do the driveway-potato rotation I'm planning... plant 10 buckets a month, until about 3 months away from the first frost. Fresh yukon golds and all-blue potatoes, monthly!

Ok, I decided on the menu. Thanks for all the suggestions! The entree is going to be a seared ahi tuna steak with a sesame/ginger rub, topped with a wasabi aioli. Side of wild greens with strawberry/lime/cilantro balsamic. Bread: freshmade from-scratch garlic sticks with roasted garlic butter. Dessert: Sheryl's cream puff recipe, filled with an almond-flavored custard and topped with a dark chocolate ganache and sliced almonds. Sparkling white grape juice to drink. And since my husband is a big fine-cheese fan, I got 2 kinds of goat gouda, and a pyrenese goat cheese with peppercorns, to slice up on the side. I threw away the receipts before he could get home.

Oh, and regarding the bucket garden: save up for potting soil. It can be the very cheapest out there, but Nevada dirt has too much clay to work in buckets. There's a brand that I bought at Home Depot last year, and Walmart the year before, that's about $5 for 50lbs or so (the biggest bag out there) and it worked just fine.

As far as the fill-tubing, the best deal we found was gray electrical conduit at Lowe's for 50 cents a foot. If you can find used pvc, that saves you even more money.

Here's the duck egg. She laid it in one of the nest boxes inside the chicken coop. How cool is that?

what a good duck laying in the nest box.

On a side note,I started my meal worm farm today! Its $6 for 500 young mealworms at Petco. I bought 1000 juveniles, and 100 adults to get me started. They seem pretty happy already.

let us know how it goes. I know Sheryl has been doing it for a little while and Genny. maybe i will try that next year.

I don't see many stewpot candidates in that flock!

Returning to the egg-labeling debate...
At Whole Foods they had two different brands of "pastured" eggs. (What I'm guessing is about the closest thing to what we have, if we let our chickens run around the yard.)
-Did not say "vegetarian fed."
-Did not say "free-range" or "cage-free."
-One brand said "organic," one didn't.
-DID promise that the chickens get to run around in the sunshine, eating grass and a natural diet.
-Invited consumers to check out websites for pictures of the flock.
-Cost: $8 for a dozen large brown eggs.

I think I've got my questions pretty much answered. Now, when people ask what our eggs are worth, we have a comparison to give them.

Hey guys, I just wanted to get serious for a second and pass on a message from Sunny,

She hasnt been on for the last few days due to a family emergency. Her mother is not doing very well right now and I'd just like to please ask you guys to send your thoughts, prayers, and peaceful vibes their way. It's not looking good right now and Sunny is spending all of her time away from home and in the hospital with her mother. I'm hoping we can reach out and let her know that were all here for her in her time of need.
