Oh I purposely didn't mention which thread but no one that has ever been on here was involved. I wouldn't have brought it up if there were. It was just I've been flabbergasted at some comments folks make and this was a safe place to mention it since you are all mostly sane. hahaha!!! I laugh because I only had 3 hours of sleep last night and I don't feel very sane myself. I feel rather silly at the moment (I get terrible cases of the giggles when I'm extremely tired but there was nothing funny on BYC today). So I've been watching British telly all afternoon and now I can't stop thinking with an accent.

OK I'll shut up now!

ETA: Oh it is such a good thing you all can't hear me laughing uncontrollably right now! Now none of you will ever invite me on a camping trip. LMAO!!!

Missy, I must work until 8pm now so I'm going call you once I get off. I was going to have you and John meet to pick up your ducklings but he wants me to make sure we pick the girls. I'll let you know when and where.

Ok, call or text whenever you're ready. I'll be up til at least 10pm anyway.

I just mixed some chick crumble, flaxseed, cracked wheat, and oats together, then ran them through a coffee bean grinder. Then mixed it with fresh homemade yogurt. The laying hens trusted me enough to dig right in. The ducks didn't touch it until I topped it with torn-up lettuce, then they ate it with one foot in the mash and one in their water. The 6-wk-olds glared at me until I left, then crowded around it so that there wasn't an inch of space left. The babies eyed it like it was a monster, then one tried it, then another... they're now gobbling it... except for the two that haven't realized that a mass meeting means something good is going on.

Well, I've been hoping one of my girls would go broody and now I have two....the problem is, they went broody in the laying boxes! In the past my girls hid a nest of their own and hatched them but these two just took over the laying box! There are 4 other boxes and after two days of some noisy clucking when the others have come in to lay, the other chickens have started laying in the box furthest from the two broodies. OK, so that solved and I'll be able to still have eggs to sell but the other issue is the laying boxes are about 2 feet off the floor and in with all the rest of the flock! So I'm wondering what to do. 20 years ago I had a girl hatch in the hen house and the chicks were hatched dry but dead so I think the other chickens killed them.

I'm afraid if I move the nests they'll abandon them. Any ideas or anyone have some experience with this?

Pam, you should be able to move them at night to their nesting boxes. Go in the dark and place a towel over their heads and place them where you need them. Take the towel off and leave. You should see them still sitting on the eggs in the morning. If not put them back in their original boxes.

sounds like it was a hit. I forgot to mention your photos earlier. cute! fun to see your chicks. I've been so busy this week I haven't taken any of mine recently.

Good luck with the broodies. No experience here but maybe someone else will have ideas.

Sunny, do you have a count on the chicks that hatched from the eggs I gave you. How many of the Polish and what colors you got of the EE's and the Polish. Since I have two broodie's I'm now wondering what I may get and would like to record what you got.

I can't believe I finally have not one but two broodie's!

Another question I have for those who have hatched from broodies, since I have two do I need to separate them too or can they be next to each other. They're buddies and are always together, do you think they'll comingle their chicks?

Here is a picture of the father of your BLRW rooster chick. He is the white laced red (splash) color. I recently sold him and will be using his blue laced red son seen in the second picture. I am hoping to get some eggs from him in the incubator in a couple of weeks to see what he produces. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your chicks

Missy, I'm sorry you lost your silkie. I know you must feel horrible but please don't be blaming yourself, it was just a freaky accident.

Missy, I have your 2 girl ducks ready for you. I get off around 7 tonight or it might be much later. John's home today so we can arrange something to get them to you if you can't come get them? We are having a dickens trying to sex these ducklings this time but we now have it straighten out.

Candy, great pics of the wheatons. Do you have any picks of your rooster that is the father of my little rooster? I'll be taking more pics of the little ones and I'll post them on here.

I have pics of the ducklings with their chicken momma I need to post on here. I haven't had much sleep for a few nights but I did get really good sleep last night.

Sunny, I agree with you on the drama thingy too. I'm also glad we like eachother and can accept disagreements as just plain that, it's nothing personal.

Pics! First, chickens by the armload!

These all came from the California trip. Candy hatched all but the black ones, and one of the lavenders... not sure which one. Of these buff x wheaten, I really don't know who's a pullet and who's a cockerel, except for the nearest one in the picture.

Same on these lavenders... no clue who's a boy and who's a girl. But I think I have a majority of boys.

I'm pretty sure the one on the left is a girl. And I believe the single comb is from Kirsten.

The one on the right is Punk, and I think the other is a girl. He/she has a quiet, sweet temperment... unlike Punk.

I thought I had 2 cockerels here, until I saw the combs develop at different rates. Maybe I still do have 2 cockerels, but they're just growing differently. The one on the left is a boy, for sure.

And the best reason I've ever seen to try to keep a rooster! He's so breathtaking. If anyone eats him, SHAME!

My new babies, from Sheryl's hatch. I think I'll call them Curry and L'Orange. And of course, Oh'no wants to be the mom. She's sitting beside me right now, because I'm surfing the net with ducklings on my chest.

Camping out with her babies. She's going to be upset when we shut her out of the room, so she doesn't lick their butts all night.

Here is my "expert" (had to throw in those quotes for you
lau.gif
) opinion on the chick genders based on my very extensive few months of chicken ownership.

hard to tell on the buff x wheatens. I think you may have a few pullets there. Mine sure had me fooled for awhile but she's all pullet. Maybe candy will weigh in. in the photo of the 3 lavenders, they do look pretty rooish in the combs. In the second photo of lavenders, the single comb one is a pretty large comb but the other one does look like a pullet to me, too.

your 2 black ones look like pullets to me but maybe I just can't see punk's comb very well.
I think you may have 2 pullets for the blrw. The wyandottes are tricky. even though the combs are slightly pink, they are not bright red and wide like my roos were. I will post some photos for you to compare. You will see how very wide and red the combs are on my former guys. also check out the wattles.

in contrast, see the pullet below. Even though her comb is a little pink, it's not bright red like theirs and it's narrow. Her wattles are small still.

now, check out the comb on this black/lav am cockerel.

and here's the lav cockerel. You can also see the other BLRW pullet in the background.
