Nevadans?

Oh scratch that, I had forgotten about how my birds got sick last month. better just keep a closed flock to be safe.

Well just went out to fill up waterers and feed and get everyone ready for bed and found Nanners dead. She was laying on a platform right below her usual roosting spot. I dont know what happened but she was already stiff. I cannot say how long she had been there. Markie is going to be really bummed. Poor Nanners. I hope it isnt related to the illnesses from last month. Everyone was treated and she was healthy as a horse yesterday. Maybe she was just angry with me for not letting her set that pile of 25 eggs that she had been hiding and decided to just end it all. that'll show me. well it did. Nanners

Oh I'm so sorry. Is it as hot there as it is here? If she sat for a while she may have just lost enough energy to not be able to handle the heat. I'm watching 2 broodies right now and one keeps moving the eggs almost out in full sun.

O have an egg eater. Had a FBCM egg in a nest box and went to check rabbit waterers and when I got back the egg was gone. I chased one of the FBCM hens down the other day when the others were chasing her for the smashed egg she had in her mouth. They have oyster shell out there, so don't know why that's happening

Thanks for the info Ron. I got my Delawares from Sandhill Preservation. They select for early maturity and size (I believe is what they said). So you feed them this fermented feed from the time they are babies? I'll go check out the recommended post. Thanks again.
That site looks really cool! They have heirloom seeds, too.

I started them on fermented at 3 weeks, but only because that's when I found out about it. I can't remember now if the recommendation was from the start or not but the info is in that thread.

I imagine the auto-door openers become almost indespensible....like automatic watering systems for the yard. Once you have it, you wonder how (or why) you ever did without.

Are you getting the battery one or the solar one? I've seen both and haven't heard a single complaint from those that have them, other than having to engineer the doors a little.

So what color did you think eggs were before they had color pictures? They showed up grey, of course! Just think of it as a retro egg.....

Sounds like you've got the science of meat-birding down pat! I cut down on the lazy tendon mess with supplementing alfalfa and cottonseed meal for a calcium:phosporus ratio balance. I had bad timing and either didn't process my birds soon enough (and a heat wave would dispatch an awful lot for me) or I would let them go too long and -- gross thing -- the hearts were extremely encased in fat. Yeah, chickens get internal body fat like you wouldn't believe! I had one batch go so long that the hens started to lay....little pullet pellets....the tiniest eggs. BUT even going long, they were all pretty tender and delicious! Just wish I had gotten to them earlier before pouring all the feed into them.

Love, love, love the purple tomatoes! Really cool looking. How are they faring in the heat? I tried growing the white ones one year....not very appealing and even less so in salsa or cooking. They supposedly had less acid than their red cousins, but I was so off-put by the appearance (anemic food) that I never really quite enjoyed them more than once.
My favorite tomato is the German Stripe or a similar (Mr. Stripey or Pineapple). Big, yellow and red and yummy!
Thanks Dee - I don't know if I would say I have it "down" yet but I'll let you know after the next batch!

Mine had very little fat, even internally.

What happened to my post about the grey egg?? Did no one read it?????????????

Use that grey layer to breed back to a bird from a very blue egg and you will get LAVENDER EGGS! Sheesh people! Do you not know what makings you have there???
I read it Kim! I thought purple eggs sounded really cool but unfortunately I have neither the time or the space to take on a project like that. Now if you were to raise some purple egg layers for sale...

Oh poor Nanners! That's exactly what happened to that RIR I lost last week. I'm assuming it was from the heat but everyone else was exposed to the same heat and had the same amount of water so?

Ron I'm working on them, but I haven't gotten a single lavender egg in almost a month. I'd be happy to see the grey ones show up. Hopefully some of these pullets will be cooperative.

I'm sorry Aubrey! I'm really thinking heat right now since we were in the 100's today. Even though everything's the same some birds just have the issue with the heat anyways.

Kim, I agree with Ron. I did see the post last night and I would love to make lavender eggs myself but I only have 1 roo and he's a wyandotte so that can't happen. I don't want another roo since he's so quiet right now. But I would be happy to buy one from you.

I'm sorry if missed any other posts. I'm just way too tired still to read anymore.

Goodnight!

Well shoot! This is two now? Same thing happened to me about a months ago. Things always go in the threes. I found one and she must have prolapsed, a week later her best friend and fellow rooster hater, up and died. A couple of days later the 11 chicks were roaming around and a hawk got one. The one my granddaughter picked (and the only one with hairy legs) and the only chick spoken for! There was a chick that looked just like her but w/o Harry legs so I told her the hair must come off when they grow!

They do happen in threes! You're so right! Guess I'd better brace myself. Darn and those two eggs are due to hatch any time now :/ ugh just sucks that it was Nanners. She was so stinking friendly and cute. She would squat from across the yard upon hearing my voice. She is also the naughty girl who got too curious about what I was eating last month and actually jumped into my chili bowl! She was the broody who thought she could handle a pile of eggs bigger than she was haha. Aww :( I told Markie last night and he was very sad and apologized for not being home to help. He's so sweet.

Kim, how does one achieve the grey egg?

Does anyone on here know how to dispatch a rabbit? I have one that is not going found at all.
Sorry Tyler, my only experience with rabbits is hunting them, in which case the weapon of choice is a shotgun. But my turkeys and chickens I hang upside down and use a very sharp knife to cut the jugular. It's over quick!

I put grape leaves in my pickles too. I read too read that it's supposed to make them crisp. To be honest I believe lowering the processing time has more to do with crispness but my pickles are so popular my family they wouldn't dare let me mess with the recipe and we grow grapes so I have them available. My mouth is watering!

I'm going to the Farmers Market today and pick up some cucumbers. I can't wait for mine to produce at the same time.
