New Brahma Group: Blue Partridge x Partridge, Plus Dark

You're both right. He would be a king here if he behaved. Hector is ingratiating himself into my heart slowly but surely as he figures out that Mom and Dad are the good guys and his support system. If Bruno only knew what being a good, friendly boy would do for him here. A sweet rooster with his stunning good looks? Yeah, he's an idiot if he doesn't figure that out soon.

My birds' home gets more attention than my own and you know how much I love my roosters. Atlas just got his own heat spot because of his problem with his hock joint, a 100 watt black night heat reptile bulb above his place on the roost, just like his grandpa, Isaac, had. He's a doll, that big boy. I've had the best tempered roosters here and the bar is set VERY high for every up-and-coming cockerel. Hector may just meet that if he keeps going like he has lately. Bruno's position here is tenuous right now.

Hopefully he'll settle down. I've had a few Brahma teenagers who have been "rude" when their hormones kicked in, but settled down to their usual friendly selves. My fingers are crossed for Bruno!

I hope, but I won't wait long. Just got a report from DH who went to the barn first today. He opened their pen door and Bruno immediately ran out and bit him in the leg three times. He chased him down, flipped him upside down (supporting his back), popped his beak, said "no!" loudly in his face, etc. It was chaos out there. He said even Bash was chasing the Barred Rock pullets, which I've never seen. So, hormones are most definitely kicking in big-time. DH has zero tolerance or patience for that stuff. If Bruno doesn't settle down, he's out on his ample butt. Hector finally is being a good guy so, because the Brahmas are slower to mature, I'll give him a short period to chill before I put him on in the BST section or on the local online yard sale sites (full disclosure, of course).

The younger males are so crazed, I have decided not allow the older hens in Rita's group to go out with them anymore. He had poor Apollo back in his pen because he kept chasing those hens, but left Apollo's two girls out with the other roosters and Apollo was so beside himself that even he nipped DH when I said let him back out to defend his girls, that he was upset that they were out without him and with Hector, Xander and the Brahma males. I put Rita's group back in their pen to calm the situation down, which DH had let out (old rules, but not anymore) and Apollo was back out. Bruno went after Xander's hen, Rowena, and Xander put the smackdown on him-remember, Xander is just a bantam Cochin so at some point, if Bruno or Bash decides they will stop and fight Xander, I'll have to stop allowing the Brahmas out with anyone, pretty much. Xander has a big attitude and spurs to match but he's only a munchkin and I don't want him hurt. In breeding season, definitely I don't want the Brahmas carousing with the BRs anyway.

as much as we love them, there's only so many roosters that one Farm can keep safely, safely for both the birds and for the people. Bruno is a big stud, but honestly I think Bash is just as beautiful

We actually just rehomed our Serama rooster because he went after Snoopy, one of our Brahma Roos, and beat him bloody! He drove poor Snoopy under our van. Hubby had to crawl under there to get Zeb off Snoopy. When we managed to get Snoopy out from under the van, he was a bloody mess - he even has a cracked beak! As soon as we put him down, Zeb was ready to fight again.

I do agree. I think Bash is gorgeous. And he just gives off a different vibe than Bruno. If I let Bruno go and then, something happened to Bash (God forbid), guess who would get the Brahma girls?

It sounds like you had a fun morning!
Yeah, not wanting a repeat. I am so over drama about now, chicken yard, world stage, whatever! Ack!

Attitude trumps size, that's for sure! Xander has been dubbed "the Munchkin Dictator". Even Hector is afraid of him.

Time for more pictures of the big lug and the others. When I came to the pen fence, he came right up there in a threatening posture while the others were sitting peacefully, including Bash, on the roost. You can see that in the photos. They will be 23 weeks old Wednesday.

Bruno looks huge on the photos and compared to the hens. Of course he is the only one standing. Hopefully he will straighten out very soon as I want to see what their chicks would all look like. Is he beating Bash up at all?
