New BYC Awards / Badges System

Ya, those are really really great ideas! The hard part will be choosing the peeps to award. We'd love to have it be a community nomination / voting process, but want to 100% gurantee it isn't a popularity contest.
 
It just amazes me how BYC can have so many members and still feel like a chat, over the back fence, with an old friend. It just confirms what I have always believed.... chicken people are great!

There needs to be a 'vet award' or 'helper award'. 'emergency preparedness' or something.
I have folders of threads and post by members that I go to regularly, and If they had not been so helpful... well, I suppose i could have found help somewhere, but that is how I came to ByC to begin with, seeking help.
 
I agree about the chatting over the fence aspect of this place. It's astonishing how the population here is that of a good-sized town, and we see the same faces and have little cliques...and it's just wonderful.

Would it be difficult to make a third "Nomination" button, in addition to the Report and Quote buttons? Once hitting the nomination button, there would be a drop-down menu (just like the report button has) which lists the various awards possible (to keep peeps from making them up as they go), and a comment box.

Then, before an award can be made, the nominee must have accumulated a certain number of nominations (maybe 5? - 10? - 15?) for the same category (must from different peeps). And maybe the nominations must include some sort of commentary, which might help exclude the popularity votes. I would also think the nominee should be an active BYC member in good standing for at least a year.

Once a member accumulates the prerequiste nominations, then staff can validate the nominations and member eligilibility.

It might be nice, then, to distribute the awards just once a month, and make a really nice staff announcement of the monthly awards.

Of course, any nominations a member receives would carryforward if they haven't reached 10 in a particular month. Maybe you can use a cutoff date of the 25th of every month to close nominations for that month, use the next 5 days for validations, and make the monthly awards at month-end.

Again, just thinking out loud here with some ideas. I have no idea if 10 nominations is too low, too high, or just right, in this scenario.
