We will have 17 assorted Bantams. Seven Polish, Four Silkies, Two Seabrights and a few others. The hen house is 6' x 10' and the run will be 10' x 20'.

Exactly!!! I wish I could build something like that. But then again, maybe it's best that I don't have any carpentry skills. I wouldn't have any room in the chicken yard. There would be nothing but chicken houses.

Love it! I'm wanting more & more chickens....but don't have enough room in the chicken yard. Hmmm...maybe expanding the chicken yard is in order....LOL

Anyway, fireguy...your work is awesome, but just curious....why the OSB & then siding? It just seems like a lot of extra expense & labor to me. Can you not just frame it up & put siding on that? I guess the OSB provides more insulation? Are you planning on insulating it as well? I'm just confused & don't know the first thing about carpentry. I just know my hubby is putting wood siding just on top of framework & then gonna insulate inside & put OSB (which he got for free) on the inside over the insulation to keep them from pecking the insulation.

Kuntrychick, Thanks for the nice comments. As far as the question as to why the osb, then the siding. I live in Hurricane country for one. Wanted to build it very solid and the osb helps tie everything together, plus originally I was gonna go with vinyl siding like our big hen house. Then I came up with this more rustic look you see now. All I used was simple cedar 1"x6" fence boards and ripped everything for the trim out of them. The horizontal siding look is nothing more than fence boards used like lap siding, overlapping the one below by 1/2''. Will seal everything when I am finished with the construction. Putting roof on tomorrow and maybe windows. Anxious to get it finished so we can move the babies out of the brooder and into their new home. But that proberbly be until next week some time. Thanks for following and will continue to post progress photo updates to this thread.

You can come be as crazy as you want at my house......as long as you build me a coop like that one. It's wonderful!

Sooo, Got back it early this morning and here is what I have so far. It's 2pm here, so in 5 hours I was able to shingle the roof of the nest boxes....trim out windows over nest boxes.... intall soffit....then drip edge, felt and shingle on one side of roof. Taking a break and maybe a nap, then may get back out there for a few more hours later. Can't be laying around when momma gets home from work, she'd think I was slacking. Hope you all enjoy the progress today. Keep looking, more to come.
