I have a shed a basement and a covered dog kennel with two dog houses that if anyone is in a evacuation situation and needs I can see if I can help you out. Minniek @ optonline dot net

Even if we are told to evacuate, we are not leaving. We can't. I have to take care of my pets. We were told to evacuate for Irene, but we didn't, and in fact, not everyone did.

Just want to wish everyone good luck riding out the impending storm. I think my big girls will be fine out in the coop and run, it's secure. The trees are what I'm worried about. I also have 25 five day old chicks I'm caring for now. I have a generator so the heat lamp should be a go. Anyone else with baby chicks on heat lamp still? If your in a bind with them, I'm in Jackson and can help you out if you can't get them heat. Today will be spent cleaning up the yard, ugh. I'll give my girls plenty of outside time since it looks like the will be coop bound for a couple days.

I've got three week olds that I just moved to the basement, if we lose power they are moving right back upstairs...actually I think they miss the family since we moved them down. You know the chickens are family when they get counted in the amount of water we stocked for the impending storm.

Hope the storm isn't as bad as they say and all this preparing is for naught, but just in case I'd rather be ready. Best wishes to everyone.

A bit off topic from storm news, but just wanted to let anyone in the Smithville area know that someone recently released a good amount of chickens in where all the little shops are. They're fairly nice, and I had a few eat from my hands, but the rest are pretty skittish. I only saw one definite roo, and while the rest are a bit too young to tell, they look like hens. I'd take them myself, but I don't have the room/the my chicks are way too young for it.

On top of that I recently found that apparently it's illegal to keep chickens where I am! Not of course that anyone told me this when I called the zoning board, code enforcement, etc... I only found out when a neighbor called the town mayor just to make sure and ended up setting off a chain reaction that ended with a city inspection officer at my front door.

I already have my baby hens, so it's too late now of course, but as soon as this storm is done I'll be petitioning to have the ordinance changed!

Best of luck with the storm everyone! The only thing I'm not worried about is our coop. It's more sturdy than our house. We went a bit over board:)
I hope everyone's homes, families, and chickies do just fine! Good luck.

Oh, and as for a trap up date since it's been awhile:
2 racoons
3opossums
3 skunks
2 birds (at one time)
6 squirrels
1 stray cat

and..... Our polish chicken on 3 occasions. She's not to bright :-(
Every time the trap snapped shut you could see the look of "not again!" on her funny face.

My chickens are the only thing I am worried about. My coop is pretty sturdy though. If we stay inside, we will be fine. Llandry, good luck to you. You live very close to me and are close to the canal as well, correct? I remember how bad the Midstreams area was flooded during Irene... If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one who lives close to the shore. I'm sure we will both have some flooding.

Oh, and BTW my Polish hen is very stupid as well. The cockerel is smart, but not her. She runs into walls, freaks out when I touch her crest, and it takes her ten minutes to notice when the flock has left her behind. It's kind of entertaining though.

I was thinking about you today shadow rabbit! We're only like a mile from each other. You're closer to the canal but i live on a lagoon off of it so who knows what we're in for. I'm worried about my chickens too just not the coop.

My polish keeps me so entertained. I feel bad laughing at her because she really is dumb. I read so many reviews about how they're the sweetest chicken. I wouldn't really say mine is sweet because I can't get near her. She's soooo skittish! I can't hand feed her anything in order to gain her trust. She only sees directly in front of her even after I trimmed her feathers. She's very nervous. Mine does the same thing where she doesn't even notice that the rest of the gang has moved on till they're across the yard and then she freaks out. I feel bad for her because she's kind of pathetic.

Are you're rabbits outside in hutches?
