New puppy owner chat thread

We have a 12-week-old blue standard poodle puppy named Tessa. Currently she is very mouthy and barks a lot. :D We got a standard poodle because most of the family is allergic to dogs with fur rather than hair, and because we wanted to try a larger breed.
So exciting! I love standard Poodles. Most people only see them as prissy show dogs, but really they're great farm dogs, and curly hair helps them stay water proofed. She sounds like so much fun! Congradulations!

I totally agree. We've crate trained all of our dogs, as its an important roll in potty training for puppies. It helps them let you know when they need to go potty. :)
But, the create isn't a place to, "keep" your dog or trap them during the day while your not home is my point.
Eventually that's true, but there's not much else you can do with a puppy while you're not home, until they're fully house broken and trained.
A lot of people also don't understand how big the crate needs to be, (big enough to turn around in and lay down) and trap their dogs in crates that are to small. A family member of mine does this.
they get one crate for their puppy and never bother to increase the size :th

She used to be on a choke chain but it had no effect because they hooked it up to a retractable leash, so it was constantly tightened :)
I know!!! She walks BEAUTIFULLY on a harness!!!!! I don't know why they won't just use that!
Oh, that makes sense. I'm somewhat surprised the trainer put her on the prong instead of pointing out the retractable leash issue? It seems to be more the trainers fault then the owners. They're just trying to help and train their dog, and trainer went for the more sever collar approach rather than inspecting the leash/training setup.
Do they know she does good on a harness? Why don't they switch to that? I'm glad you can walk her on a harness sometimes, I bet she appreciates it. 🥰

I adopted two baby huskies on March 1st. They are crazy and awesome and silly and destructive and loving and chewing and all the things you expect baby huskies to be. LOL!! We had 2 older huskies who died in October and February and our remaining girl needed a pack so I found a bonded pair of approximately 6 month olds and drove about 4.5 hrs each way to go get them. They are completely awesome and I am grateful for my older girl, Sasha, who has helped train them. They are still crazy and probably will be for another couple of years but that's huskies for ya!

Deacon wears a prong all the time.

It doesn't hurt. Its a communication device. If he pulls ahead, he gets pressure, It corrects him before I can even get the word "heel" out of my mouth. It is also great for commands. If I ask for a sit, and he doesn't, I give pressure on the prong. If I ask for something it gets done. He will never get away with not doing a command
Yep, it works just like a chain. It really depends on the breed. The prong is also know as the "pinch" collar, as it gives more direct pressure with the prongs. Some dogs just do better in a prong. I've heard of great success stories with the prong vs. chain, but jumping staring to the prong when a dog could already do well on a normal chain is a different story. Sounds like you know exactly what your doing with the prong, were some other people dont. :)

This is a puppy school trainer, not an in home trainer- she's sent out to puppy school for the day, and the guy works with a bunch of dogs at once. If they had done classes or found a positive trainer, I'm sure everything would be much easier, but yeah
It seems to be more the trainers fault then the owners.
Definitely! Some of the issues are the owners' fault (e.g. her jumping problem) but none of them have ever had a dog before, so it's understandable.

I've tried telling them that she does good on a harness, but I can't think of a direct way to say it without sounding rude and overstepping
