Our family just started our second chicken journey. We wanted a few friendly chickens to add to our family’s farm. My MIL and her husband have chickens but they don’t ever spend time making them friendly so my boys get sad when they run from them 🙁 We ended up getting 2 straight run full size white Cochins, 2 Isa Browns so we had at least a few good layers, and we got 2 from the assorted bantam bin because.... well... ADORABLE! ❤️ We’ve pretty much figured out one is a black Cochin bantam but the other I’m having a hard time figuring out because I don’t really know what I’m looking at. Can someone help me with “muffs and beards”?? Can you see them on a week old chick? What do I look for? My little one looks to me to have “puffy cheeks” but someone on the Facebook group said they didn’t think so. I know they are noticeably fluffier than any of the other chicks we have. Also combs, when are you able to tell what kind they have? I have been researching so many breeds and colors and it is so interesting to me!

You should be able to se all of that right away. Pics please?

The pics are obviously under the heat lamp so they aren’t the clearest. I posted the one of the backside because I can see the little puff sticking out on the side of the face. I just wondered if this isn’t a muff, what one would look like on a week old chick.

Darling little fluff ball! Welcome to the army of crazy chicken ladies - just wait until you get into hatching!
Does the little one have feathered or clean legs? My suspicions would be either EE or d’Uccle.

yes “she” (wishful thinking) has feathered feet! ❤️ I suspected Mille Fleur D’Uccle until someone told me “her” cheeks weren’t puffy 😕 these are a few pics when we got her Thursday. I had narrowed it down to either buff Brahma or D’Uccle. She came from Tractor Supply via Hoover Hatchery so both of those breeds were the closest option. She also appears to have a tiny single comb to me but again, I’m not 100% sure what I’m looking at 😂 I considered hatching this time because we homeschool BUT we are a house full of animal lovers and if something happened we would never forgive ourselves 😂

Definitely a d’Uccle then! She’s hatchery quality so a lack of puffy cheeks isnt all that uncommon. She could also be referred to as a booted bantam since she doesn’t have the beard or muffs.

ETA: I just looked at the pictures again, she does look like she has muffs and a beard. So d’Uccle for sure!

I know it’s the worst proof but in the back is a duccle the colored one behind the left standard white

oh I saw those cheeks immediately! 😍 I’m super excited to see her grow up! I knew I wasn’t crazy that I saw my chick’s fluff 😂 It’s hard to really catch in a pic though!
