Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Any idea what genders my 3 week old serama chicks are? Not sure if they are old enough to tell but any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok, so I was told that it looked like I had 4 hens. Seemed about right until all of a sudden I've been hearing one of the "ladies" crowing in the morning. By the time I get out to see who it is, they stop to beg for treats and attention. I also noticed today that the one I'm very sure is a female (silver pencilled frizzle Cochin with typical pullet coloring) has very messed up butt feathers like someone's been trying to breed her. The one that's worrying me is my Easter egger/silkier mix. It's got very red feathers along its neck, and IMO, looks very "showy" for a hen on the front half, but the back half is pretty drab looking. Very confusing. This bird has never been aggressive towards me. I hold him/her all the time and it will climb into my lap or beg to "step up" and perch on my arm like a parrot would. It has been showing slightly more aggression towards the other 3 birds with occasional pecks on the head when they're not looking. They're all about 29 weeks old.

The waddles do look bigger and more red than normal, but my two with beards keep having their beards plucked by someone, so I think it's skin irritation more than waddles. Any help is appreciated! Thank you and sorry for the long post!

That's definitely female. They are probably getting red combs and wattles because they are close to laying. Could lay any day, if not already.

Can you post pictures of the rest of your flock?

If it's not the one I had already posted, my money is on the white one. It's been "in charge" since a very early age. The black one and the white one and both some type of mixed breed between silkie, Easter egger, and Cochin.

At 29 weeks the black and the white are both female, too. What about the frizzle? Can you post a standing profile pic? Though I do think that one is female, too.

Are you sure what you are hearing is crowing, not the egg song? Are you getting eggs yet? Sometimes hens crow, though.

She won't cooperate to take a new one, but this is an old pic of her from the side. The only thing that's changed is her face, comb, and waddles are more red now. She's also been my first one to squat. The sound I've been hearing is definitely a series of several distinct crows most mornings. Very typical sounding crows. It's usually followed by a series of strange chicken "screams" for lack of a better word. I've heard a couple "practice" egg songs every now and then too, but so far nobody has laid any eggs yet. I've heard that hens will occasionally crow when they're in an all female flock, but wasn't sure if the odds of that were very good.
