She won't cooperate to take a new one, but this is an old pic of her from the side. The only thing that's changed is her face, comb, and waddles are more red now. She's also been my first one to squat. The sound I've been hearing is definitely a series of several distinct crows most mornings. Very typical sounding crows. It's usually followed by a series of strange chicken "screams" for lack of a better word. I've heard a couple "practice" egg songs every now and then too, but so far nobody has laid any eggs yet. I've heard that hens will occasionally crow when they're in an all female flock, but wasn't sure if the odds of that were very good.
Looks female. How old in the pic?
It's pretty common for hens to crow if there is no rooster. Even if there is a rooster, hens will sometimes crow, but that is less common.
