Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

She won't cooperate to take a new one, but this is an old pic of her from the side. The only thing that's changed is her face, comb, and waddles are more red now. She's also been my first one to squat. The sound I've been hearing is definitely a series of several distinct crows most mornings. Very typical sounding crows. It's usually followed by a series of strange chicken "screams" for lack of a better word. I've heard a couple "practice" egg songs every now and then too, but so far nobody has laid any eggs yet. I've heard that hens will occasionally crow when they're in an all female flock, but wasn't sure if the odds of that were very good.

Looks female. How old in the pic?

It's pretty common for hens to crow if there is no rooster. Even if there is a rooster, hens will sometimes crow, but that is less common.

Very uncommon for a young pullet to crow though! I had a 2 year old hen that would crow with a particular rooster but she didn't do it with any other rooster.
Whilst there is nothing screaming cockerel about the white one, I have a gut feeling that may be your culprit too. Can't decide if I am seeing the start of streamers from that crest or just imagining it. At 29 weeks you would expect it to be more obvious but silkies are more difficult to sex and EEs can sometimes keep you guessing too so perhaps this cross has picked up that ambiguous trait from both parents.

What color where the parents?

Not really sure, I got them from a breeder and she wasnt sure which chickens they came from.

@Peepchirpquack

Your chicks are too young, but I'm going to say Moon and Nugget are probably cockerels, while Athena looks more feminine.

Please post pictures again in a few weeks. :)

Thats kind of what I thought. I have 6 chicks at the moment and am going to be giving half away to a friend this saturday ( they will be house chickens so I can't have that many living in the house lol), but I will be sure to post pics of the ones I keep!

Chicken newbies here. We have our first small flock. 2 EE and 2 BA. One of the Australorp's is at least 2x the size of the other, fully feathered while the other is still fuzzy.

Do we have a Roo or a Runt?

First pic is the one is Roo questions. All others pic, the Left Australop (Big Fat Mama) is 2x the one next to it. Are they pullets or is one a Roo and/or one a Runt?

Thanks!

Pics below.

Much too young to guess gender. Chicks can grow and feather at different rates, even if they are the same breed.

I've got some hens with round tails like that. At 29 weeks, cockerels would be very obvious. They are hens.
