Okay, thank you! At what age is it usually possible to identify sex?
Generally, they all start out looking like pullets and we watch for signs of cockerel development, usually around 6-8 weeks, but it can vary. Some brred mature at different rates. I have had chicks that I knew were males before 3 wks and males that were over 10 wks before I could tell. Thing to remember is pullets will not get red combs until after about 15 wks. Again, there are always exceptions, but that's what makes it interesting!

4 week old Welsummer chick. I know still young, but my experience is that orange spiky comb this young and no tail feathers is strongly predictive of boy. All the other chicks have long tail feathers. This chick had a strong dark V on head at hatch which I thought meant pullet (I ordered a pullet) but not feeling confident at all now.
That first pic sure does look male by the way it is standing and thick looking legs. It is too soon to tell, but I would be worried too. Hatcheries only guarantee 90% accuracy at best. It's not an exact science.

Is this a boy or girl? IT always behaves more boisterous and it's tail is much much perky-er than the other chickens.
By the comb color, it is looking like a pullet, but age matters. How old is it?

Can you post updated pics in a week? Might be able to tell then.

I'm not familiar with the breed either. New pic next week?

Wishing4 - thanks - this hatchery guarantees 100% (I know, right?) so they will refund me. But I'm bummed because of the 7 chicks I got - the two I got to round out my colorful egg basket (this Welsummer and a Marans) are both looking roostery. I guess I they can make some pretty babies next year?

This is my Marans chick I'm worried about too. Golden cuckoo, sexed as pullets. I think these are auto sexing but only if the genetics are clean. This is a hatchery bird so not sure what is mixed in here. Golden feathers coming in on chest and large white spot on head seem to be boy traits. 4 weeks.
